Building Safety Week Promotes Fire Protection Codes

Building Safety Week in the United States is May 5 - 11, 2008, to promote the achievements and benefits of building and fire protection codes. I'll bet some readers right now are rolling their eyes at what appears to be another marketing ploy of creating a "recognized" day of the year (in this case an entire week) to get you to buy something. I understand the sensitivity, but let me share with you why I am jumping on the bandwagon to recognize and even promote Building Safety Week. (I promise there are no greeting cards or gifts required) Building Safety Week was first observed almost 30 years ago in 1980. Since that time, local governments, building departments and fire departments have dedicated this week to raise public awareness on best building safety practices and to recognize the important role that building and fire prevention codes have in standardizing building safety for everyone.

The theme of this year's program is, "Building Safety Where You Live, Work and Play." This theme is intended to send the obvious message that most people spend a majority of their time inside some type of structure so the topic of building safety deserves a moment of your time. For most people, when you enter a house or building you're not thinking about whether it is properly constructed and safe. This fact alone is a testament to the high level of trust we place in our building and fire prevention codes and the assumption we have that our public servants are properly updating and enforcing these codes.

The sponsor of Building Safety Week, the International Code Council (ICC), along with other code development associations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), create the building safety and fire prevention codes that address all aspects of construction. This includes items such as structural soundness of buildings, reliability of fire prevention and suppression systems, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency and sustainability. To ensure buildings are safe requires the active participation of property owners, building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, builders, engineers, and others in the construction industry.

This year's Building Safety Week is especially meaningful to supporters of residential fire sprinkler use as the International Building Code (IBC) is at the center of attention with proposed code changes pending that would require fire sprinklers to be installed in all residential structures. The recent US Fire Administration's official endorsement of these residential fire sprinkler requirements has fueled the intensity of this debate.

In greater numbers than ever before, fire prevention departments across the United States are utilizing Building Safety Week to raise public recognition and support for the use of residential fire sprinklers. Although we have achieved a high standard for building quality in the United States, there are still some proven fire protection benefits commonplace in commercial buildings, that are still missing from that building we value most...our home.

Wrought Iron Furniture To Transform Your Property

Why Wrought Iron?

If you want to make your property a head turner that will result in compliments galore, wrought iron outdoor dcor is a great way to achieve that result. This is a great investment that has never gone out of style. Metal furniture and accessories have been popular for many centuries for function and beauty and ease of maintaining.
Beyond fencing and gates, you can also use wrought iron garden rails, lamp posts, benches, tables and chairs, swings, gazebos and light fixtures, barbeque or fire pits and more. Not only does metal outdoor dcor look good, it creates an aura of your property being valuable and classy.

Bathroom Shower Remodeling - The Center Point to Any Bathroom Redesign

Despite being just small fixtures, showers play a big role in the overall layout of a bathroom. Bathroom assumes a distinct personality when showers are added.

Planning your Bathroom Shower remodeling

Bathrooms are one of the most expensive rooms in the house remodeling. Bathroom shower remodeling can change the entire design of the room. Your selection of materials has a big influence on the price of your project.

There are many options available right from standard to walk in shower. If you would like the luxury of steam shower at home, go ahead and choose one. Bathroom shower remodeling project can be completed in a day, thanks to the different options available including acrylic materials which can be used to cover the tub and shower walls. You can also eliminate the tub if you wish. However, it is cost effective and faster to leave fixtures in their current position, as moving them will require moving and draining the drain lines. This is a time consuming job and would add up to your expenses, unless you are considering a complete bathroom remodeling.

Acrylic and fiberglass overlays are available, and can be set in place over the existing tub. You can also try matching walls near the bathtub area. This would give an appearance of renovation of the entire bathtub area. Bathroom shower remodeling project can be a good DIY project for homeowners.

Consider Project with End Result in Mind

Plan the bathroom shower remodeling project in advance and sketch the steps involved in the project. Study the sketch thoroughly before starting the project.

Drains have to be matched with the existing ones or be routed, if you are installing a new tub or shower base. Water supply connections should be of little concern with the availability of flexible hoses. However, most drains are solid pipes and will have to match the outlet to which it will be connected.

The next major factor in bathroom shower remodeling is the walls. Using tiles on the walls is time consuming and would cost more, but will last long. If tiles are used wall backing will need special treatment. Using fiberglass or acrylic will make the job easier; it can have fewer joints through which water can leak.

Warning

If the bathroom shower remodeling project is extensive, it would last several days. Arrange for an alternate bathroom facility before starting the project.

Lead Generation Web Site - How To Build It

In four days John has to pay a number of bills for his business including payroll and rent. He has already drained his lines of credit and maxed out his credit cards. While sales have been ok his problem isnt in closing deals, but getting new prospects to talk to. It takes approximately 2 months from getting a new prospect until he can close them and without a steady supply of prospects coming in he simply isnt closing enough sales to keep cash flow coming in. His situation is growing more desperate every day

Anyone that owns a business or must produce sales to live has been or can relate to John. If you are in real estate, financial planning, building contractor, insurance, mortgage lending, or any other number of businesses that require a constant supply of interested and qualified leads then you could benefit from building a direct response lead generation web site. A lead generation web site is just what it sounds like. It is a web site that works 24/7 generating interested and qualified leads for you. There are not a lot of lead generation programs out there that can boost that type of power. The key words here are interested and qualified prospects.

A prospect that has no interest in what you are selling is a poor lead. A prospect that has an interest but cannot afford your product or isnt really qualified to be a customer for any other reason is also a poor lead. Quality prospects must have both attributes to be worth spending your very short and critical sales time pursuing. To create a successful direct response lead generation web site you need to do a little homework.

First, you need to know what your ideal prospect looks like. What industry do they work in? What position do they hold in a company? How big is the company? Here is a key question, what problems do they face everyday that really causes them to lose sleep? You really have to understand your prospect, how to reach them, and what their hot buttons and issues are. You must be able to walk in his/her shoes and really understand the problems they face and how you can solve them. For example, if you are in real estate and your target market is first time home buyers then the strength of their credit and how much money they have to put down may be the two issues that really plague them in buying their first home. If you are a contractor your clients largest concern might be all the horror stories they have heard about bad contractors so they are really concerned about how to pick the right contractor. Once you know who your target market is and what the key problems they face are now you are ready to build your direct response web site. The web site has several key ingredients to be successful

1. Focused Customer Centric Web Site:
The obvious item is a web site, what is not so obvious is that this site needs to be very tightly focused on your target market and it must be centered on the customers needs, not you. So many web sites out there are company focused. They discuss the history of the company, the management team, and an overview of products or services. Essentially it is a large brochure about you, not them. By doing the home work above you should be able to use the elements of your site to immediately communicate with your customers.
a. Copy:
This is the big one. Make sure the copy (text) on the web site speaks to the client and to their problems. To do this effectively you must get their attention. Every page should have a powerful headline that simply causes the person to immediately stop, read it, and immediately dive into the first line of copy after the headline because they are so interested. The first line of copy should get them to read the second line, and that line should get them to read the third line and so on. For your copy to do this you must literally reach out and slap your prospect in the face with problem they face and indicate that you have the solution to that problem. Effective copy (see below) has several important elements by itself.
b. Graphics:
Your graphics should support the copy and the sales goal. These graphics can be pictures of products, diagrams of how the product works, or very well chosen marketing pictures that illustrate visually what the copy is already saying to the prospect. Remember the sole purpose of the graphics is not to add aesthetic value to the page, but support the sales message. If it doesnt do that it is fluff and a distraction, cut it.
c. Intuitive Navigation:
Your site must have intuitive navigation, the buttons have to not only tell the prospect very clearly what they will find if they click that button, but also create a desire in them to click on it. To do that your buttons have to strategically placed and have appropriate labels. This is not the place to get cute and artistic. Plain, simple, limited navigation that is easy to see and act on is what is required. You may need to do some usability testing on this navigation with prospective users to determine if you have it right.
d. No Clutter:
Dont clutter your pages with all kinds of extraneous copy, useless graphics, ads for other sites, dancing Flash based ads or decorations, and other nonsense. With all the neat things webmasters can do with Flash and JavaScript you might be tempted to let them create little effects on a page that look cool but at the end of the day only distract and confuse the user. For a much more detailed discussion of this please read my position paper on how Flash can kill your web site. It can be found at www.web2gold.com/Position.htm
2. Effective Copy: For copy to be effective it must do more than simply list what you offer or details about your products. These types of things are called features and contrary to popular belief features dont cause people to buy. The elements of effective copy include
a. Powerful Headline:
Again the headline must literally reach out and grab your prospects attention. It must have a powerful benefit statement that tells them by reading further they will discover a solution to one of their problems that keeps them awake at night.
b. Benefits:
Your copy must clearly show benefits to your prospect of doing business with you. For example, a feature of a computer is a fast processor, but the benefit is the ability to do work faster or process data faster and do more stuff in less time. In short, your copy must stand on its own and sell when you cant be there. This is especially important on the web since you never know when people are reading your site. To learn more about effective copy please visit www.web2gold.com/Copywriting.htm Effective copy should follow the AIDA principle in marketing, which gets attention, develops interest, creates desire, and causes the prospect to take action, which brings me to my final item a direct response web site must have
3. An Offer: An offer is the item you are giving away to get the person to respond. In direct response advertising whether it is display ads or direct mail must have a trigger or an offer that causes the prospect to take some type of action. It can be a free gift, a booklet, a special bonus if they order by a certain time frame, etc. Offers come in two basic flavors, hard and soft
a. Hard Offers:
is the prospect must make a buy decision or at least a serious step in that direction immediately. These types of offers are designed to elicit a buy decision immediately. This might come in the form of a 25% discount on all purchases made before a certain date. It might be a bonus they get if they call and schedule an appointment with a sales agent today. Regardless of what it is, the basic requirement
b. Soft Offer:
A soft offer is designed to allow a prospect to express interest in your product or service without necessarily having to make a buying decision today or allowing a sales person to meet or talk with them immediately. It gives them an opportunity to express some interest without going all the way. In essence, it creates a warm lead. A soft offer can be a free booklet or information kit. Perhaps a free DVD that explains the product in greater detail, it might be a free sample with some information.

Regardless if the offer is hard or soft it must first be something that interests the prospect. It doesnt do any good to present an offer if the prospect doesnt really care what you are giving them. The prospect must attach value to the offer for it to work properly as a direct response mechanism. That is why it is so important to understand the prospects mind set and what problems really keep them awake at night and what hot buttons will cause them to buy and what types of things they attach value to

By understanding these triggers you can create offers that really get at the heart of what motivates a prospect to action. Some direct response marketers will say that hard offers are good for small purchases that dont require a large risk on the buyers part and soft offers are good for products or services that require more risk or have a longer sales cycle. Some marketers believe you can have both offers at the same time. Your site can present both and generate both types of leads for you, both urgent prospects more ready to buy and warm leads that will require a bit more work to close.

The effective direct response web site is built around these principles. It is a niche market to a clearly defined and specific prospect. It works by utilizing effective copy, page layout, graphics, and the rules of effective design. It attracts both willing and qualified prospects and leads them through a pre-defined set of steps to an offer which is designed to capture their information.

The mechanism that captures their information can be a form they complete, a phone number they call, or even an online customer service agent they initiate conversation with by clicking on a button and essentially have an instant message discussion with someone live. Building an effective direct response web site is like building any effective piece of marketing. You must clearly understand your goal, what your ideal prospect looks like and then use effective direct marketing principles and effective web design to rake in all the prospects you can.

In future articles I will discuss how to get more qualified traffic to this web site and other elements that can be added to a site to make it even more powerful. Hocus Pocus, It's All About Focus

Fifty years ago my grandparents were not distracted or confused about their purpose. They may not have liked their calling. In fact, my grandmother did not, but she never lost her focus. "The farm" provided grazing for 3 cows, a few fat pigs, one goat tied to a post, acres of corn, pear trees, peach trees, and a cherry tree by the farm house. At least this is what I remember.

My father remembers picking beans, and his Mom giving birth under a tree, and then going-back to bean-picking (she gave birth 12 times; my grandfather had a focus too!).

"The farm" gave and was life for Mommer and Popper. At noon, their sons and workers crowded the kitchen for lunch. At times, there would be 20 men eating from Mommer's table. For years, the stove was stoked with wood.

They labored every day including Sunday when they went to the West Haven Connecticut farm market at 3AM. Although they never thought of focus, they understood the importance. Every action was intended toward keeping the farm going, killing a chicken. How many of your grandmothers can whack the head of a chicken and throw it in a pot simmering on a wood burning stove?

Neither wore Armani or Burberry. Their children carried a bushel of potatoes to the barber to barter a haircut. Popper could graft branches on a tree;Mommer could cook spaghetti sauce for 30 on a wood burning stove.

My grandparents weren't too nurturing, but I observed that living on a farm requires focus. Every animal and each plant dies without attention. They both wore glasses, but neither was myopic or hypermetropic. They could see what needed doing, knew they could do it, and did it. Yes, they did complain; farming is hard, even tragic work, but they never gave up well into their 80's.

No farming in my life except for a couple of raised-box gardens. My tools are software, spreadsheets, and optimization tools. I harvest fees for my work when portfolios grow, and when my clients can buy with the fruits of their portfolios from the financial planning guidance I provide.

Mommer and Popper cultivated about 6 /7 crop fields, but they were all vegetables. Growing fruits and vegetables is the farming they understood, and they never veered from it.

Maintaining one field of endeavor requires focus because distractions grow faster than weeds. Many weeds attempt to choke the one plant we want to grow.

Internet Marketers

My father spent hours pulling weeds around the bean plants. When his parents said, "Go pick beans," he must have understood the harvest depends on pulling out the weeds (not really; he didn't want to feel the wrath of his parents on his butt!) Don't think he liked doing it, but my guess is he learned something invaluable. He kept his focus as a home-building contractor. Only once did he veer, and it was a costly distraction.

So, what do you do to keep the weeds out and the plants growing? Using Internet marketing jargon, discover and nurture your keywords. What motivates you? What one subject defines you clearly and deliberately?

Remember Jack Palance in "City Slickers"? Holding one finger upward, he said to Billy Crystal, "Just one thing". Find that "one thing" that gives you a focus. Write, memorize, and meditate on that "one thing".

Next stay alert to shades of meaning. Every plant, animal, fish, human shivers with nuance. Find the energy within every facet of what keeps you focused. What gets your attention. What makes your heart stir rapidly (other than romance)?

To get to your goal, you will need to fulfill a sequence of tasks (pulling weeds).Keep track of each one by listing and "checking-off" its completion. Monetize tasks by asking and recording. "How much did that effort earn?" "How long did that task take?"

You cannot measure what you don't track. Keep a journal.Observe what works and what does not. Make sure that your focus resolves a problem for yourself and others. Once you discover a pattern to your focus, how can you create a self-perpetuating system with monetary rewards?

Pulling weeds is tedious, but the harvest comes. Keep your eyes on your field and that "just one thing" that validates you. All of a sudden you will awaken to the magic of "Hocus pocus, it's all about focus."

Bathtub Refinishing Fumes - How To Protect Yourself

Bathtub refinishing is being used more by hotels, apartment complexes and homeowners because of a housing downturn, a mortgage-meltdown, and overall depressed and depressing economy as a way to save money in their bathroom renovation. Another interest in re-glazing is being fueled by informed masses who have shown a continued interest in "greening" their homes, particularly in making them more energy efficient. Consumers are looking for ways to save money, and the environment and that is what bathtub refinishing does- provide savings of up to 80% over replacement while sparing the landfills.

But unlike other services like carpet cleaning, plumbing, pest control etc, where consumers know what to expect from their service contractor, tub re-glazing business is unknown to many. And because of this lack of knowledge, many don't know what the process involves, what to expect and what the the final outcome will be. Here is the bathtub refinishing process in a nutshell: A tub is cleaned, fully etched, cleaned, prime coated andtop coated.

The equipments used are a turbine, a sprayer and a big exhaust fan. The protective equipment is similar to what you'll see used in mold remediation or asbestos removal. If the fumes coming out of the bathroom are not healthy for the one doing the refinishing in the bathroom, do you think it is safe for you, your pets and especially younger and older ones in the home?

Many bathtub refinishing companies will tell you that they use a proprietary coating formulated by them and for them. Ask for their sacred MSDS. It contained enough toxic materials to make their technicians suit up as if cleaning a room full of asbestos. Water based coatings are getting better but water condenses in the bathroom and on the tub. Go figure. Every etching product contain some level of acid. The concentration of VOC's is high. Unfortunately, from the biggest bathtub refinishing companies to the small town bathtub refinishing company using exhaust fans to get rid of the fumes and their smell. They leave a lot of toxic fumes and smell that linger for days.

There are air scrubbers that can suck up those fumes and odors and still keep the environment?
These portable systems operate in a completely sealed off bathroom. They are quiet, so that guests and tenants that sleep on while bathtub re-glazing is done next room. In fact, some companies are using hospital grade air scrubbers while re-glazing a tub because of the importance these companies put on the health of their customers and the environmental impact of their work. These portable units are in the bathrooms where the re-glazing is done.

All the fumes and odors are captured and there is no hoses or cords coming out of the bathroom as a safety hazard. The technology is here. Next time you call your friendly bathtub refinishing company, ask them how they are going to mitigate the odor and fumes. If they are still using old technology with its environmental impact in this century, they are not your company. Ask questions, protect your health, and those of your hotel guests and apartment tenants.

The sluggish economy is forcing hotels and hotel chains, to find creative ways to save money and the environment as they remodel their bathrooms. Many are concerned about the effects of over-spray fumes on their guests and their health, the noise created by antiquated bathtub refinishing systems, the impact of old technology on the environment. Ask questions and lots of them before you hire your next friendly bathtub refinishing company.

Squeeze Page - Straight Or Reversed?

The other day, not too long ago, I was asked, whether a squeeze page or a reverse squeeze page performs better for generating opt-ins for a promotional type of email newsletter.

Of course my answer was, "It depends".

But let me start slowly here and tell you about some history first before I will explain what a squeeze page and what a reverse squeeze page is.

Squeeze Page History

The traditional squeeze page is said to be invented by Eben Pagan, who has become a perfect role model for the typical Internet marketing success story. Eben's original idea was to tease Web visitors with valuable information, but not giving it to them directly. Eben was the first one who asked for an email address in exchange (or the first one, who became famous for it).

I think it is important to note that we are not only talking about generating a list of email addresses here. The ultimate purpose is to sell valuable products. Preferably it should be your own product or it could be an affiliate product as well.

A little detour: You can make a good living from promoting affiliate products, but did you ever wonder, why so many successful affiliate marketers start selling their own "How to make money... " product at a later point in their career. The reasons can be summarized real quickly, but that actually exceeds the scope of this little treatment here:

  • instead of working as an affiliate, you have affiliates working for you
  • your product, your terms
  • even more money
  • independence

The Purpose Of A Squeeze Page

The point is, online marketers have learned -- as direct response marketers have learned before them -- not everyone who reads a sales message or advertising for the first time will buy the promoted product right away. You cannot just let them leave. The modern squeeze page on the Web resembles the post card attached in magazine ads. It's the same mechanism. The advertiser or Web site owner promises something that is useful for the readers. They will get it in exchange for their contact information.

Back then, when Eben had introduced this direct response concept on the Web, it seemed quite revolutionary and bold, because everybody thought all the information on the Web were free to access. Breaking that believe, made Eben succeed with his product in the dating niche.

It is reported that it takes 7 visits to a vendor's Web site on average before a prospect buys the featured product. An email list generated from a squeeze page shall make sure that the prospects indeed are there, back on the site, again, and again,... till they buy or opt-out. An email list makes its owner more independent from paid sources of traffic to their Web site. (Let's be honest here, even so-called "free traffic" costs money, unless one values time with 0.00$ an hour.)

Especially new online marketers forget the real purpose of their email list very quickly after they have started it. They very often fall back into the believe that those people want to hear from them. The truth is, when they signed up, they wanted the cure for their problem, otherwise they wouldn't have signed up to the list. They only care about what you have to say, what you have to write as much as it helps them to solve their problems. That's copywriting 101, isn't it.

That said, it makes sense to trade valuable information that helps your visitors with their email address. This allows you to stay in touch. That's exactly what the original squeeze page does.

After talking about the background of squeeze pages a bit, let's look what a squeeze page is

The Traditional Squeeze Page

  • A single Web page that offers specific, valuable information to a certain group of people, like an ebook "How To Get Rid Of Back Pain Forever". It is important to drive targeted traffic to that landing page. In many cases this page will be the home page of a domain, like www.cureyourbackpainforever.com (That domain is actually a real one, but only parked, not being used.)
  • The only 2 actions a visitor can follow are join the newsletter or leave.
  • The copy on a squeeze page shall be persuasive, create trust and highlight the benefits of opting in. Most marketers have started to incorporate audio and video messages to make the sale on their opt-in form. There is a strong call to action.
  • Some marketers even put opt-in forms in front of their sales letters. That means you cannot even buy the product before making the first step of giving away your email address.

Many people -- consumers and business owners -- feel that's going too far, they refrain from filling out such a from respectively refrain from using a traditional squeeze page on their sites. That brings us to the next step.

The Reverse Squeeze Page

It follows the same principle, but will allow the visitor to consume a chunk of free information, before they need to provide their email address. At the end of those messages, they will generally be told that there is much more free, valuable info in store for them, if they sign up.

Typically you would see it implemented like presenting a free report for download right away, or more recently a free video. At the end will be the call for action, "You like my info? Now, sign up to get more of it ...".

The difference between the reversed squeeze page and to a normal sign-up form on a Web page or a Blog is that the possible actions for the visitor are still very limited in case of a reversed squeeze page. It's about signing up or not signing up.

What works better

As I said in the opening, "It depends!". You need to test it for your market, for your audience, for your traffic sources. That's the only way, you'll know.

You can always check what type of squeeze pages are common in your market and start out with that model, but you might find that squeeze pages are not so common outside the "Money Making Niche" at all. In that case just introduce them.

You can tear out and collect pages that have elements of what your are looking for in your new home, and the juxtaposition of different magazine photos can stimulate brand new ideas that have never before been seen in any magazine or in anyone else's home. Isn't this ability to be one of a kind an important reason you decided to build rather than purchase an existing home anyway?

For a "hands-on", three-dimensional feel for what different elements look like and how they work, nothing beats a visit to your local home improvement store. They have set up mock kitchens, baths, and entryways to give you a real feeling for how their products function together in a realistic setting. As they say, take what you like and leave the rest.

Rather than sitting back and waiting for someone else to come up with the home of your dreams, isn't it time to get out there and participate in that once in a lifetime opportunity to create the perfect space for you and your family to live and enjoy life? With a little work and imagination, your dream home can become a reality.

Proper Use of Bathroom Lighting and Vanity Light Fixtures

Designing a bathroom with proper task and general lighting can be a daunting task. The designer- or the DIY remodeler- has to balance the need for light with the overall ambiance and style aspects. Light sources should be selected so that there is enough light for shaving and grooming, without compromising the comfort or beauty.

Bathroom Task Lighting

For task lighting, it is important to place the light source close to the vanity or sink, thereby minimizing glare and shadows. Aside from creating a more flattering reflection, the amount of energy consumption is also reduced. Keep in mind, that more light is needed as we age. Hence, the age of the homeowners need to be considered to effectively meet their needs. Placing bathroom sconces on either side of the mirror is always a great idea. However, bath bars can also be effective above the vanity mirror. Again, if you are concerned about energy consumption, there is now a great selection of fluorescent bath bars that provide excellent light while reducing heat output and energy use.

Ambient and General Lighting

The general light source in a bathroom is referred to as ambient lighting. It provides light for less demanding tasks. If you have a small bathroom, chances are that the task lighting will suffice. But, if you are decorating a larger bathroom, you do need a separate light source for general and ambient lighting. General light also balances out the brightness of task lighting, so that there are no dark corners in the bathroom. As a general rule of thumb, you need a 60W incandescent light or 26W fluorescent per 60 square feet.

I Think It Is Necessary To Hire An Exterminator To Prevent Termites

I believe that professional exterminators handle the termite problem better than any individual can because they are trained and equip with everything needed for the job. It takes time to rid your home of termites and a company that offers a warranty will serve a better purpose than one that does not.

When we think about the question at hand, is it necessary to hire an exterminator to prevent termites? It depends on how you feel about dealing with chemicals and if you feel confident about doing the job. If you have the right information on how to prevent termites or to get rid of them, and you know you can do it, you may want to try your hand at protecting your home or buildings yourself.

It may cost you less to the job yourself, but unless you follow directions of how to do it, you may fail. Even after you perform the task, you have to keep checking to make sure you succeeded in killing the termites. Many people think, I did it and now I am done, no your not, you need constant inspections.

When we think about whether or not it is necessary to hire an exterminator to prevent termites, we need to also know how bad the problem has become. Sometimes the termite infestation is so bad that a professional is needed. Fighting the war against termites is tedious and sometime a pest control company does it better. They can determine the type, how bad it is, where the infestation is and check the soil for termites outside, since some people have a hard time determining between ants and termites.

With most cases of termite infestations, it is necessary to hire an exterminator to prevent termites and to get rid of termites. When dealing with chemicals, you need the proper equipment and the right chemicals to kill you type of termite infestation. Besides this point, some termite colonies have become resilient against extermination.

With all the knowledge, skill and abilities the exterminator has for the job, you may just save money by using their service rather than your service. If you need to learn the habits of the termite, read article that inform you on this subject. If you want to do the preventive procedure, you read "Tell Me How To Kill Termites" or "Learn How To Get Rid Of Termites". These articles give you some great ideas and steps to take to prevent and rid your home of termites. The exterminator cost some money, but doing it yourself may be more affordable.

After reading, the articles and you are still asking yourself if it is necessary to hire an exterminator to prevent termites, and then by all means, do that to help yourself. Although the steps appear easy, some people are uncomfortable dealing with hazardous chemicals, as they should be. Professionals do the job fast and complete to rid your home of termites and do the outside work, which might be difficult for some homeowners to accomplish.

What to Do About Basement Waterproofing - House Remodeling Ideas

Owning a home with a basement can give us additional living space that is not typically available in a home with a crawl space. Many people put recreational rooms in the basement as well as using them for storage and often as a personal workshop. It may be difficult, however, whenever water in the basement becomes a problem. There are really two different ways in which water can invade this area of our home, both of which will take some form of waterproofing to correct. They can either come in slowly, almost undetected by us or it can quickly invade our basement and cause it to be flooded.

Since the basement is below ground level, moisture is often a problem, even if it is not visible. It may show up as mold or mildew that begins to appear on the walls and although you cannot actually see the moisture that is present, there are plenty of telltale signs that will help to identify the fact that you have a problem.

Doing a little bit of basement waterproofing for this usually means putting a specific type of paint on the walls or perhaps even spraying them down with chemicals so that they are impervious to mold growth. It may also help if you run a basement dehumidifier on a regular basis, even after you have completed the basement waterproofing project.

The other way that water can invade our basement is all at one time which can cause it to be flooded. I have personally had a difficulty with this for many years and it can be destructive, especially if you use the basement for living space or storage. If the water is coming in at one specific location, sealing that location in some way or another may help to cure the problem a little bit.

There may be times, however, whenever more drastic measures need to be taken. If you're basement floods on a regular basis, you may need to dig down to the bottom of your foundation on the outside of the walls and install a French drain. This will divert any water away from the house so that it does not end up in your basement.

Having a problem with water in your basement is simply keeping you from enjoying part of your house. Although waterproofing your basement is going to take a little bit of work, it will all be well worth the effort whenever you can take this part of your home back again.

Right Thinking For Change

Doing what is right is not always going to be the easiest thing to do. For the majority of events in our lives I believe we will find that doing what is right is usually the more difficult route to take. Most relationships require a type of honesty no one wants to use and most businesses require integrity rarely seen.

Is doing the right thing impossible today? Most certainly not it is the only real way to have a well developed and fulfilled life. Doing the right thing is by far the greatest single antidote for greatest illnesses, setbacks, and challenges in life. There is no better way to get the most out of life than to seize integrity in all personal dealings.

The mind is the center of the life within the human body and is responsible for controlling all health, action, thought, and dreams. What the mind requires is simple it was designed to receive programming from its surroundings and develop accordingly. However with all of the negativity in our world the mind has to be bombarded with unintended material and try to maintain a positive environment. The human mind flourishes while in a positive environment and disintegrates in a negative one.

I don't want to talk about the power of positive thinking just the power of right thinking. Our world is so focused on greed, violence, and lust that right thinking is very difficult to do with out the right motivation. I truly believe the only way to think correctly is to connect with the eternal and step outside of the world into the unknowable. In the presence of such vastness our lives can come into focus as a miracle. It doesn't matter what we believe spiritually at this point matter because life on Earth is a miracle, both theists and atheists must agree our very lives are a rare and beautiful thing in the Universe. We are higher than all life forms on this planet and what put us there was our gift of intelligence and our belief in something greater than ourselves.

We can question everything that is the nature of our minds. We can take action on those thoughts that is the nature of our will. It is my hope that my will would transform towards a better tomorrow, a will that is unaffected by the rampant negativity and destructive thinking so prevalent today. Imagine if all people demanded more out of themselves and refused to be half asleep while the world is in crisis. Doing what is right is never lazy, weak, greedy, violent, impatient, or a host of other descriptions it can all be summed up with one word and that is LOVE.

Real Estate Investing Strategies for Flipping Houses

If you're like most real estate investment wannabes, you've taken seminars, read books, watched infomercials and DVDs, and have spent considerable amounts of money to learn about the ins and outs of the field. If you're still struggling with how to get started, here are some of successful investors favorite ways to make money in real estate.

The first has become popular with the advent of several television programs. It's popularly known as flipping houses, which just means buying, fixing up, and reselling a property for a profit. It sounds simple enough. Find a rundown house, spend what can be a considerable amount of time and money to upgrade and repair it, and then recoup that investment, along with a sizable profit, when you resell the property.

Other investors like to buy homes that are in need of the repairs and upgrades you see so often portrayed on television and sell them WITHOUT doing the repairs. It's not as crazy as it sounds. All it involves is buying a property by contract, structuring that contract so that you have the right to sell the underlying to a building contractor or other investor who will have the means to be able to subcontract out the work.

This process is sometimes called bird dogging or wholesaling. Investors don't make as much per transaction, but the turnaround time is much faster. You don't have to deal with the 101 things that can and do go wrong, as you well know if you're a fan of the various television shows that follow the ups and downs of investors as they try to flip their homes.

Real estate investors have always looked for houses that have the potential to be fixed up and upgraded and then resold at a profit. That's partly because, depending upon how hot your local real estate may be, the potential profits can be in the five-digit range for each transaction.

There are dangers, of course, since many projects have at least one hidden problem that throws a giant monkey wrench into the process, reducing profits and lengthening the time to finish. Therefore, it's important for you to know your market and how much things will cost to repair before you start working this popular investment strategy.

Lease options can also be a profitable way to get into a rundown house, bring it up to standard, and then either resell or rent it, depending upon your taste. This allows you to generally get into a house without the real estate agent's fees, which can be considerable. Once you've got the property up to standard, you can then sell the home on a lease option to someone else, which is generally good, because they'll have more incentive to keep it nice.

There are many other ways to make money in real estate, of course, but these are some investors favorites. The main thing is to pick a strategy you're comfortable with and stick to it until you're an expert at it!

Tips For Effective Home Lighting

Home lighting is an essential part of home dcor, and needs to be considered carefully based on a variety of factors. First, home lighting is required for specific tasks, such as putting on makeup and shaving in the bathroom; or paying bills and writing letters in the office.

Other lighting illuminates a space, so that the kids can play or you can move about without bumping into objects. Finally, there is ambiance lighting, which may consist of a chandelier on a dimmer switch that can be adjusted for a romantic dinner or game time. It is important to consider these functions of home lighting when adding this element to your living space.

The good news is that no matter what type of lighting you are looking for, you can find a decorative way to bring that illumination into the room. While many homeowners limit decorative home lighting to lamps, you can also get style and function from decorative overhead fixtures and chandeliers.

Look for fixtures that will coordinate with the rest of your dcor, such as wrought iron for a rustic look or brushed nickel for a sophisticated, contemporary touch. Ceiling fans can provide double duty by offering air movement and lighting at the same time.

There are many attractive models of ceiling fans that will add to the style, from rustic designs for the log cabin to bamboo fans that bring the outdoors in.

Home lighting is an essential element to home dcor, providing style and function at the same time. The right home lighting will make all the difference in the comfort of your home.

Lighting Creates the Mood, Visual Impact and in Some Cases the Actual Composition of YOUR Photograph

Lighting creates the mood, visual impact and in some cases, the actual composition of your photographs. Lighting is without question, the single most important aspect in photography. Today let's discuss how your camera sees light.

If you look at a standard gray scale one end is pure white and the other is pure black. Of the several shades in between, the one right in the middle is called "neutral or middle gray."

Middle gray is the standard used to determine a perfect exposure and is what your camera's light meter is calibrated to expose for. With each shot, the camera reads and evaluates the overall brightest and darkest area of the scene, then calibrates or averages the light (highlight) & dark (shadow) area of the image, looking for a middle gray exposure. Today's camera's are fairly accurate and this averaging metering system can produce good quality images in most cases. Or it will produce an exposure that you can at least manipulate to your liking.

Now under ideal lighting situations the averaging system that your camera uses to evaluate the lighting is fine. However anything less than ideal lighting is going to create some problems, when you use your camera, in auto exposure mode. A good example of this is, when you include, a large area of sky in your composition. The camera's meter averages the overall scene, and if your sky is considerably brighter than your main subject, or foreground area, you will end up with an under exposed subject or foreground. Now if you are trying to shoot a silhouette that's fine. But if your main subject is in the foreground you will need to make an exposure compensation, by increasing your exposure manually, or use a fill flash to get the proper exposure on your main subject.

Another difficult lighting situation is winter shots with lots of white snow. The camera will see all that snow and try to make the overall scene middle gray, underexposing the shot unless you make a manual adjustment to compensate.

Knowing how your camera works and how it does its calculations will help you "fool the camera" and correct the exposure when you want to have control over the final results.

When you're in a situation with a lot of snow, for instance, you can do a few things to compensate for the mistake your camera will be inclined to make...

The first and easiest solution is to see if your camera might actually have a setting for snow. If it does, then adjust your camera settings accordingly. This tells the camera to adjust for the scene being predominantly white. The camera will automatically make the adjustments and not try to make your snow middle gray.

The other, more advanced, thing you can do is adjust the camera settings yourself. In your camera's modes you can set your camera to take shots that will be 1-2 f-stops over or under exposed (read your manual for how to do this on your camera). Most SLR cameras have a + &- dial that you can make your adjustments with. Experiment and take a few notes. In no time it will become second nature to you and you will recognize when an exposure compensation is needed almost instantly.

Take a few test shots and look at your histogram - A perfect exposure will have a peak like a mountain or hill in the middle. If this peak is to the left it is leaning toward under exposure and if it is to the right it is leaning towards over exposure.

When switching modes and making these types of adjustments, be sure to change them back when you're done!

Learn How to Tile a Bathroom Floor

If there is anything that can beat ceramic tile for a bathroom floor, I'd like to know what it is. Durable and nearly impervious to water damages, ceramic tile also is adaptable to just about any architectural style. The ceramic tile industry now offers an incredible variety of tile as well as reliable materials for setting it. If tile is more expensive than some other floor coverings, keep in mind that it can last as long as the house with little upkeep.

True enough, but a tile floor can be a nightmare if you have no idea how to tile, or if it is not laid out and installed carefully on a well-prepared subfloor. One of the key early considerations is the substrate on which the ceramic tile will be installed. Floating a mortar bed at least 1.25 inch thick used to be the only choice, but now there's a better option: quick to install cementitious backer board.

As for the ceramic tile itself, durability and smoothness are of major concern. Most tile manufacturers rate their tiles for durability by classifying them as residential, commercial, light industrial or industrial. For a bathroom at home, the residential grade is just fine. Smoothness is rated on a numerical scale measuring the coefficient of friction, or COF. Even though the roughness scale goes all the way to 9, I have found that a rating of 0.6 provides good slip resistance to ceramic tile. Just keep in mind, though, that the COF goes down when the tile is wet. If you don't find the COF specified on the tile box, you can call the manufacturer for the information.

If you want to save money on tile laying works, and be able to impress your family and friends, you have to learn the easy techniques on how to tile

To find out how this video course can provide everything you need to know about laying ceramic tile, visit http://how-to-lay-tile.co.cc

"Frozen Smoke" and Conservatory Insulation

One of the most searched for items on the Internet recently has been "scientists hail frozen smoke." I was intrigued by the article in The Times that started this frenzy and decided to investigate further as I was researching super insulating materials.

According to The Times "frozen smoke" is, "one of the worlds lightest solids, can withstand a direct blast of 1kg of dynamite and protect against heat from a blowtorch at more than 1,300C."

The company that make the product, Aerogel, do so by extracting water from a silica and then replace it with gas such as carbon dioxide. This creates an extremely light material 99% of which is made up of gas contained in millions of nanopores and although it is classed as a solid the gas gives it a semi-transparent appearance.

Aspen Aerogel are creating an insulated lining for space suits. They believe that a 18mm layer of aerogel will be sufficient to protect astronauts from temperatures as low as -130C.

But getting the stuff into a conservatory at the moment is going to be a bit expensive, although prices will drop in the next few years. Some people have experimented with aerogel insulation and reported big savings in their heating bills. Where space it at a premium, a thin layer of aerogel will outperform traditional insulation blankets.

But it is its potential as a replacement for glass that we are most interested in. A Swedish company are experimenting with producing aerogel glass. This will provide low U-values with the equivalent thermal insulating quality equal to five to ten double glazed units. Unfortunately, at the moment experimental production is currently limited to just 15 square meters a month.

Other benefits of Aerogel Glazing when it does become available will be that; inert gases will not leak from between double or triple glazed units; the glazing at just 12mm thick will be lighter than multiple-glazed units; it will provide better sound insulation; and since no low-e coating will be required, better light transmission.

All this should mean that conservatory blinds and awnings will become a thing of the past, ventilation will be less critical and living with a south-facing conservatory will also be less of a problem.

So we look forward to installing aerogel in a conservatory in a few years.

DIY Home Repair; How to Patch Breaks in a Basement Wall

One effective DIY home repair job that takes only a few minutes, but is nevertheless important to the structure of your home, is patching breaks in a basement wall.

Before beginning the project, however, watch over the area that needs patching for a couple of months. Although most cracks in cement walls are the result of normal settling, they could be a sign of major structural problems. If the problem area does not stabilize, but continues to get worse, seek the services of a building contractor, or repairing building contractor.

Assess Your Basement Concrete Wall

If the damaged area is leaking, fill it with quick-hardening plugging cement, or concrete epoxy. When mixing cement for dry patch spots, make a mortar using one part cement with two parts sand. Add water slowly, just enough to make a dough consistency; stir well.

If a new leak springs up near the repair site, there may be water backing up against the exterior of the foundation. In this case, more drastic measures for basement wall leak repair must be taken.

Whether your basement is cement or cement block, follow the repair tips below.

Do it Yourself Home Repair; Holes in cement

  • Use a cold chisel to enlarge the hole; undercut edges so the plug will not pop loose
  • Mix plugging cement and work into a tapered stopper shape
  • As soon as it stiffens, pop it into the hole like a cork; hold in place for several minutes

Cracks in Cement DIY Home Repair
  • Using a chisel and hammer, cut cracks back to sound material; bevel the edges
  • Moisten the cracks well
  • Using a trowel, turn the mortar several times; work the mortar into the cracks with the tip of the trowel
  • Once the mortar begins to harden, pack the crack full
  • Shave off excess mortar using a wet trowel or putty knife

Home Renovation Tip Repairing a Window Well

Poor drainage is often the culprit behind a basement well window that becomes stained by water or seepage. A faulty downspout or clogged gutter is often to blame, so check out both of these areas first.

Clean debris out from the well and flush with a hose to ensure it is draining properly. If the window well is made from concrete, try inserting a hose in the drain. Blow out any obstructions; waterproof the well using a waterproofing compound designed for masonry surfaces, if necessary. Follow product directions carefully.

If your basement well window is made from gravel, remove the gravel and waterproof the outside wall of the foundation. And then install fiberglass drainage board next to the wall.

If basement concrete wall restoration will be part of your diy home renovation plan, you may be able to handle the project yourself. However, if damage to basement walls and wells is extensive, chances are youll need the services of a local building contractor.

3 Do's and Don'ts of Landscaping

Landscaping a home is like putting a cherry on a sundae. Dressing up the front or back yard will make your home look and feel complete while providing beautiful aesthetics. With so many appealing options to choose from, starting a landscaping project may seem like a daunting task. But it doesn't have to be. Your landscaping project can be as ambitious or simple as you want it to be. However, whatever the size and scope of your project, here are a few thing to keep in mind when planning the perfect garden.

Do's
1. Look before you start
Our first instinct may be to jump right into the project, but look at the overall landscape before doing anything. Consider your garden space as a whole and try to plan for an overall landscaping look and feel. This will make your garden flow more. If you choose to tackle one area of your garden at a time, without an overall plan, it may be years before you actually complete the project.

2. Develop a focal point
For the best results, you want the eye to travel to a specific point or destination. This can be done with one or two visual elements that will capture the attention and make you pause for a second. A focal point can be achieved with a pond or a fountain, a special seating area or a beautiful gazebo.

3. Mix and match
Don't be afraid to experiment and try to avoid having the same color or the same design throughout the entire landscape. This can make your garden seem boring and monotone, when it should feel relaxing and inviting. Try mix and match to achieve a more natural and appealing environment. But be careful not to over do it. Find two or three visually creative ideas and mix and match them. It will bring the landscape to life.

Don'ts
1. Don't eliminate the yard
While you do want to consider the entire yard space when planning your landscape, you should avoid completely eliminating the yard. Adding brick or stone, can be beautiful and offer low maintenance, but having greenery will liven up the yard and give it an inviting and natural feel. Also, keeping some grass in your garden will help cool the landscape on a hot day and provide a soothing feel.

2. Don't take on multiple styles
Be careful when choosing the style of your landscape. While mi and matching, in moderation will liven up your garden, trying to mix completely opposite style may backfire. Try to avoid combining a minimalist stone courtyard with a formal English garden. The idea is to keep the landscaping flowing with an overall style and some focal points.

3. Don't skip out on unseen materials
As with building a house, the foundations of a landscaping project are very important. Don't skimp out on the materials. Make sure your drainage is done properly, that the deck sits on solid foundations, that the pond has the appropriate amount of sand and gravel underneath it, that you have enough good quality dirt for your flower beds, etc. By investing in these foundation materials and following the directions correctly, you will reap the benefits of a beautifully landscaped garden without having to worry about future problems.

Controlling Your Mind

The idea of self-mastery has a very fierce opponent and also a courageous ally. It is by learning to control these forces that progress and success are achieved.

For centuries the thinkers have known the only way to change an outcome in life is to think it into being. All of our actions must first be thought before there is any action. Great authors and philosophers have all attributed the reasons for individual performance to be merely the mastery of ones own thoughts.

Learning to control the 1500 gram organ inside of your skull is a lot easier said than done. If you were raised in the perfect environment, fed the right foods, and taught the right operating procedures for your brain you would be a shoe in for success. However none of us have had the perfect life and in some cases that does not seem to make a difference.

Time is a constant in our lives. From the day we are born it keeps moving forward. Our use of our individual time is evident by what we leave behind, and very few people will leave much behind that endures for even a generation. So when you really think about your amount of time and what you do with it a course of self-improvement is a daily task.

We are inextricably bound to either our desires in life or our aspirations. Both run infinitely in opposite directions. Desire is closely related to obsession in many ways and should be controlled at all costs it is a main cause for failure and moral degradation of the human spirit. Aspiration however is what we need to loose in our lives every minute of the day by finding opportunity in all of the moments we are fortunate enough to embrace.

Steering the mind away from desire is not easy work and that is why there are so many self-improvement books on the market today. The human brain is one of the most complicated structures in the known universe and an $8.99 book will barely scratch the surface. In order to make real progress we must get our minds focused on the infinite, for by looking there for the answers we will find a limitless supply of aspiring thoughts.

Morality is the first major step in mastering your thoughts and it is also the hardest. Our pre-disposition for being lustful, violent, and greedy really wreaks havoc with any self-improvement we are attempting to perform. Note: these are the traits of the animal kingdom and not the human race. No matter your thoughts on God you must agree that these traits are a blemish to your personal development, to humanity as a whole and need to be dealt with by all people.

It all boils down to the two little guys on your shoulder one called desire and the other aspire, so aspire to do great things with the time you are given. Get involved with making a difference, eliminate the time wasters in your life because the clock is ticking and the world desperately needs your help. Leave a legacy of hope for the future rather than the empty cavity of a life controlled by desire. At this time in the world nothing could be needed more than the personal development of each and every human being.

You can find all kinds of products that will help you to remove nearly all types of stains. The perfect solution in completely removing stains is by cleaning the spills and dirt the second they appear.

There are a number of ways to clean up stains by using products in your home which you use frequently, such as detergents, rubbing alcohol, vinegar, lemon juice, etc. You just need to know how to use these regular household products.

Your first option is to use 1 teaspoon of clear, household type ammonia and a half cup of cold water. You can apply this solution to the carpet directly or use it in a spray bottle. It is crucial not to wet the carpets backing when you use the solution. Once you have applied the solution, you can use paper towels to blot; allow it to dry from top to bottom.

Your second option is to use detergent solution made of dish soap or hand soap. The ideal combination is one quart of water and one quarter of a teaspoon detergent. You need to make sure the soap does not contain lanolin or bleach.

Your third option is to use water. It will re-hydrate the stain to help with removal. The majority of pet stains can be cleaned up by using a steam cleaner. Once you are done, be sure to dry the area as completely as possible.

Ink stains

1. Buy isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

2. Apply it by pouring some onto a clean white towel or cloth. You can use paper towels if they are white.

3. Blot the stain as much as possible until it is cleaned.

4. Be careful, because if the stain is small, you should blot in one direction only so you do not spread the stain.

Beer and wine stains

1. Mix a solution with 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar.

2. Apply the mixture to the stain. You can use a spray bottle to saturate.

3. Allow the stain to sit around 10 to 15 minutes.

4. Use a sponge and clean in a rubbing motion.

5. Rinse the area with warm water.

6. Brush the carpet pile back into the natural direction it has.

7. Use layers of white paper towels; place them on top of the area; put something heavy on the paper towels. Wait until the area has dried.

Protect your carpet against paint drips, snow, mud, dirt, stains, and heavy traffic conditions. Read about plastic carpet protections as well as temporary carpet protections.

Web Design Basics Do You Know the 5 Essential Elements For Any Web Site?

There are those that say that the world became a lot less understandable with the arrival of desktop publishing and multiple fonts. Everybody began to add bells and whistles to the simplest documents.

To some extent this is just as true for web site development! Before you get fancy and clever with the design or special effects, make sure youve addressed a few web design basics.

It starts with good content. Make sure your site offers useful and informative content. Visitors to your site arent looking for an art gallery, theyre looking for information. Make sure you give it to them.

Make it readable. The content wont do much good if its displayed in yellow on a white background, is in the smallest possible type, or uses an unreadable font. This also includes compatibility issues that make content unreadable make sure your site works on Microsofts Internet Explore, Mozilla, and Apples Safari.
Add good navigation. If youve provided the content, make sure your visitors can find it. That includes search engines trying to catalog your site appropriately. Keep your menus and submenu obvious and direct. Make sure links and cross-links are visible and intuitive. Adding a site-map is always a good addendum to helping both users and search engines find what theyre looking for.

Keep it clean. Its essential that your site has no bugs, no dead-end links, no spelling errors, and no out-of-date data. In all events, inspect and monitor your site content carefully.

Keep it simple. Web design basics are just that basic. Dont use effects unless they add-value to your objectives. Using elaborate effects, even using tools like Flash, often make your site harder to use and harder to get to the information your visitors are looking for. Likewise, dont implement an elaborate page structure when a simple one will do.

These essential web design basics boil down to common sense. Paying attention to these four essentials is a good benchmark for managing your own site.

Wind-Powered Turbine - Great Home Tips

If you are planning to build a DIY wind turbine, the first step is to get yourself a good guide with plans from online retailers and start making one. You can go green while saving electricity at the same time without having to buy an expensive wind generator. You will be able to get all the materials needed plus the plans for less than $150.

An average Joe can make his own 1000W wind turbine. Why not make one for yourself, too? You can even get your family in on it and make it a fun family project.

To get you started, you will first need the plans or the blueprint. Find a good place to work in. A regular garage will do. You do not need to get special tools. You can work with the simple tools that you already have. It would be great to have an extra pair of hands.

Look at the plans to find out what you need for the project. It should include a Direct Current (DC) motor. This will serve as your power generator. As the blades of your turbine spin, they turn the DC motor on which would then produce electricity.

Order the motor first for it takes a number of days to get it. This should not cause you much delay because you can use this time to start working on the other sections. You can already fashion the blades of your turbine. Wood is the preferred material for blades especially when making bigger machines. However, should you opt to, you can also use PVC.

If you intend to work with wood, make sure to get strong, good quality lumber. Your blades, especially the tips, should be able to withstand the force of the wind. Constructing the blades should not be complicated. Simply follow what your plans say. It is easy enough for you to make your own set in just one day, using only common tools.

As for the other parts, you will be surprised to know that you can get most of them for free. These include batteries, towers, and others included in your plans. You can piece all the parts together as soon as you get your motor. When that is done, it is now ready to be put up in the wind. Set it up at a place where it can stand at 15 feet above any structure within 300 feet. Your DIY wind turbine will now be able to produce free electricity.

Breaking Free From Inertia

Inertia is to remain at rest, do nothing, and unchanged. I remember when my life was full of inertia. I was really busy going nowhere really fast.

Business as usual is one of the quickest ways to the grave I can think of. Whether it be the literal 6 feet under or the sad state of complacent existence to many people are willing to live their lives in. Life is very wonderful, and each day should bring about the sense of discovery a child has.

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in they gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt

One of the biggest forms of inertia holding people back today is the addiction to media, be it the Internet, television, or print. The general public seems to never get enough of the news, sitcoms, and magazines that have no real purpose. Oh no, I used the P word. Without purpose we are hopelessly bound to a world where nothing really ever changes, and without action our purpose is lost.

Developing a purpose is like making a business plan. A purpose should be something that creates a fiery passion inside. Choose it with care, and focus your energy on it one step at a time. Consider these things when defining your purpose.

1 What do I do well?

2 What do I like to do?

3 Who do I admire, and would like to emulate?

A healthy, realistic, and positive attitude are the key to success in any endeavor we set our minds on. The road is full of people bound by inertia who are more than willing to help us stay stuck in the rut we might be in. That leaves us as our one and only motivator, don't expect your family or friends to jump onto your dream with you when the next episode of House is on.

There are however, many like minded people who care about nurturing the relationship of success. Networking with others is essential for breaking the bonds of inertia and propelling a purpose towards the successful path we have envisioned. Seek out these people in your local community, online, and any other way you can think of for they are the key to making dreams a reality. Networking is the single biggest factor for personal or company success, and we are all you INC. so network.

Why It's a Mistake to Offer to Split the Difference

In this country, we have a tremendous sense of fair play. Our sense of fair play dictates to us that if both sides give equally, then that's fair. If Fred puts his home up for sale at $200,000, Susan makes an offer at $190,000, and both Fred and Susan are eager to compromise, both of them tend to be thinking, "If we settled at $195,000 that would be fair, because we both gave equally." Maybe it's fair and maybe it isn't. It depends on the opening negotiating positions that Fred and Susan took. If the house is really worth $190,000 and Fred was holding to his over-inflated price only to take advantage of Susan having falling in love with his house, then it's not fair. If the house is worth $200,000 and Susan is willing to pay that, but is taking advantage of Fred's financial problems, then it isn't fair. So, don't fall into the trap of thinking that splitting the difference is the fair thing to do when you can't resolve a difference in price with the other side.

With that misconception out of the way, let me point out that Power Negotiators know that Splitting the Difference does not mean splitting it down the middle. Just split the difference twice and the split becomes 75 percent/25 percent. Furthermore, you may be able to get the other side to split the difference three or more times. I once negotiated with a bank that had a blanket encumbrance over several properties that I owned. I had sold one property out from under the blanket, and our contract entitled them to a $32,000 pay-down of the loan. I offered them $28,000. I got them to offer to split the difference at $30,000. Over a period of weeks until this four-unit building closed, I was able to get them to offer to split the difference again at $29,000; and at $28,500 and finally they agreed to $28,250.

Here's how that this Gambit works:

The first thing to remember is that you should never offer to split the difference yourself, but always encourage the other person to offer to split the difference.

Let's say that you're a building contractor. You have been working on getting a remodeling job that you bid at $86,000 and for which they offered $75,000. You've been negotiating for a while, during which time you've been able to get the owners of the property up to $80,000, and you've come down to $84,000 with your proposal. Where do you go from there? You have a strong feeling that if you offered to split the difference they would agree to do so, which would mean agreeing at $82,000.

Instead of offering to split the difference, here's what you should do. You should say, "Well, I guess this is just not going to fly. It seems like such a shame though. We've spent so much time on this proposal, and we've come so close to a price with which we could both live. It seems like a shame that it's all going to collapse, when we're only $4,000 apart."

If you keep stressing the time that you've spent on it and the small amount of money that you're apart on the price, eventually the other people will say, "Look, why don't we split the difference."

You say, "Let's see, splitting the difference, what would that mean? I'm at $84,000 and you're at $80,000. What you're telling me is you'd come up to $82,000? Is that what I hear you saying?"

"Well, yes," they say. "If you'll come down to $82,000, then we'll settle for that." In doing this you have immediately shifted the negotiating range from $80,000 to $84,000. The negotiating range is now $82,000 - $84,000, and you have yet to concede a dime.

So you say, "$82,000 sounds a lot better than $80,000. Tell you what, let me talk to my partners," (or whatever other higher authority you've set up) "and see how they feel about it. I'll tell them you came up to $82,000, and we'll see if we can't put it together now. I'll get back to you tomorrow."
The next day you get back to them and you say, "Wow, are my partners tough to deal with right now. I felt sure that I could get them to go along with $82,000, but we spent two hours last night going over the figures again, and they insist that we'll lose money if we go a penny below $84,000. But good golly. We're only $2,000 apart on this job now. Surely, we're not going to let it all fall apart when we're only $2,000 apart?"

If you keep that up long enough, eventually they'll offer to split the difference again.

If you are able to get them to split the difference again, this Gambit has made you an extra $1,000 of bottom line profit. However, even if you can't get them to split the difference again and you end up at the same $82,000 that you would have done if you had offered to split the difference, something very significant happened here. What was the significant thing that happened?

Right. They think they won because you got them to propose splitting the difference at $82,000. Then you got your partners to reluctantly agree to a proposal the other side had made. If you had suggested splitting the difference, then you would have been putting a proposal on the table and forcing them to agree to a proposal that you had made.

That may seem like a very subtle thing to you, but it's very significant in terms of who felt they won and who felt they lost. Remember, the essence of Power Negotiating is to always leave the other side thinking that he or she won.

So the rule is never offer to Split the Difference, but always encourage the other person to offer to Split the Difference.

Key points to remember:

1. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that splitting the difference is the fair thing to do.

2. Splitting the difference doesn't mean down the middle because you can do it more than once.

3. Never offer to split the difference yourself; instead encourage the other person to offer to split the difference.

4. By getting them to offer to split the difference, you put them in a position of suggesting the compromise. Then you can reluctantly agree to their proposal, making them feel that they won.
