How to Install Ceramic Tile - Proven Steps to Success

You can quickly learn how to install ceramic tile and have stunning success with your project. Sure installing tile is usually left to the pros. But with the right tips, most people can build beautiful surfaces. It's just a matter of getting the right tools and learning how to prepare the surfaces and put the tile in place. Following are the four basic steps for getting tile installed the right way.

Gathering the materials is the first step. Now materials includes getting the few basic tools required for tile installation. There are just a few special tools required. The most important tools you don't already have are the tile cutting tools. That would include tile nippers, maybe a tile cutter board and usually a tile saw. You can rent a saw or start with a very inexpensive saw too.

The other part of gathering materials is deciding on the tile you will use and how much tile you need. That may be the hardest part of the whole project. That's because you have so many tile choices. After you decide how much tile you need, you'll know how much tile adhesive and grout you'll need too. Your tile supplier can help you figure quantities of all the materials. Once you have your materials you're ready to get started with the installing.

An important preparation step is getting the base for the tile solid and clean. A surface that moves will cause cracked tiles. Often the easiest way to get a solid smooth surface is to put down cement board. But that's not necessary since tile can be installed over many different materials. Once you have your materials and your surface preparation done, the actual installation is not very hard.

Laying the first tile is the hardest part. That's because the position of the first tile determines how much cutting of tiles you'll do. It also determines how straight the joint lines will be. Getting the tiles lined up correctly will make for a neat installation. The best way to get the lines straight is to use your chalk line early and often. Actually setting the tiles involves some art. Setting tile is easiest if you gently twist the tiles into position. You don't want to drop the tiles into place or slide the tile into place either. Make sure you have enough mud on the tile so you have a little extra so you can bump the individual piece into place.

Once the tiles are in place, the grouting of the joints goes quickly. Grout does come in several types. Whether you choose sanded or unsanded grout depends on the size of the joint. Another option is using epoxy grout where the tile is in a constantly wet place. After the grout sets briefly, it is easily cleaned to finish the job.

You can learn how to install ceramic tile with the right instruction and some practice. There's no reason why you can't do a professional looking job on your first project. There are quite a few tricks to learn to make it easier to lay tile.

Child Custody For Grandparents - Trying to Keep Your Family Intact

Child custody for grandparents involves special familial legal rights that you have to visit with your grandchildren. When you're denied visitation to see your grandchildren with whom you have had a loving relationship in the past, you can go to court to get your custody rights enforced.

Each state has its own set of laws regarding visitation for grandparents. There has been some national consensus that if it is in the "best interest of the child" to continue their relationship with their grandparents then visitation rights will be conferred.

The grandchild grandparent relationship is an important anchor for most grandkids that have a difficult home life. Visits with a loving grandparent makes grandchildren feel that they have an outlet to be loved when their parents are not well equipped with parenting skills.

Child custody for grandparents can be as simple as having regular visitation with their grandkids to outright permanent protective custody when there is abuse, incompetence and neglect on the part of the grandkids parents.

There are so many cases where grandparents can be the glue that keeps the extended family together. When a grandchild's home life is chaotic and dysfunctional, regular visits with grounded grandparents can help keep the grandchild on a successful life path.

Grandparents usually know their own children's failings. When their children have kids of their own these failings can become magnified. The grandparent is in the unique position to explain to their grandkids that their parent's failings does not mean that they are a failure themselves.

Crystal Chandeliers and Art Glass Fixtures: Why we Love Them!

As a traveler from the West, it might seem strange to travel all the way to Japan and include a visit to a Glass Museum featuring Venetian and Murano glass and crystal from Italy. However, like so many other museum visitors, an appreciation and attraction to sparkling luminescence and colorful display warrants the price of admission.

For over 1000 years some of the worlds best glass makers have been making Murano glass. Passed down from master to apprentice Murano glass designed in chandeliers and light fixtures can include: clear and colored crystals, finely cut glass shaped into flowers, and marbleized, frosted, gold and silver glass shades. Some of the top lighting manufactures including: James Moder, ELK and Kalco incorporate Murano glass in a number of chandeliers and pendant fixtures. For contemporary lighting, ELK has a wonderful selection of colored glass pendants. Another manufacturer and line to check out is Shonbeks Geometrix. This lighting line by Schonbek marries the beauty of crystal with architectural detailing that is exquisite and delicate, like finding a treasure.

And while the inclusion of colored glass crystal in lighting is nothing new, it is certainly growing. Just like the fascination with stained glass lighting as witnessed for over a century with reproduction Tiffany lighting, people continue to enjoy the decorative effects of colorful glass patterned lamp shades. Collections like the above mentioned Shonbek Geometrix, include appeal for both modern lighting design and sparkling color intermixed in the fixture.

If you wonder where all this is going well, its not going away. If you love colorful illumination - Swarovski crystal, Murano glass, and colorful glass fixtures keep checking the collections of your favorite designers, or, new designers. Theyre sure to keep surprising you with some real lighting gems!

Designing A Nursery For Twins

Statistics show that the birth of twins is on the rise. This has opened the floodgates for a specialty market that targets the moms of twins. Baby gear for single babies just won't work and baby stuff for twins is of course more expensive. The baby nursery that was in the works for one little baby now has to be completely redesigned for two. Even if the parents choose to have separate nurseries for the babies, there will more than likely be indications that each child is a member of a larger unit. Why not! There's fun and safety in numbers. Here's a chance to take nursery decor to places that others only dream about.

Some parents of twins choose not to limit themselves to one nursery for their babies. The reasoning behind the fact that some parents plan separate bedrooms for multiples is that if one baby wakes, the sounds and activity might wake and otherwise sleeping brother or sister. I consulted some friends of mine that are moms of twins and found this not to be the case. One mom had taken the route of decorating two individual nurseries for twins only to find that the children seemed to miss each other and slept better in the same room. I suppose this is normal as they had spent nine months together in much closer quarters. Imagine the shock to suddenly find yourself alone in a strange environment. This particular mom of twins felt at times that they slept better in the same baby crib. This was her personal experience but I'm not sure this practice would be advisable for safety reasons.

Don't panic if you have a relatively small room that you plan to convert into a nursery for twins. The only extra piece of baby furniture that you will have to squeeze and will be an additional crib. Optional equipment that you might want to consider would include an extra baby swing or playpen. The baby dresser, changing table and nursery rocker all work just as well for twins as they do single births for a while.

Decorating a unique nursery for twins can be challenging. A Noah's Ark theme is cute, timeless and the animals marching along in pairs are perfect for twins. However, you might want to use your imagination and come up with a theme that is not as common as Noah's Ark thats seen quite often in the nurseries of single babies.

I was called upon once to decorate a nursery for twins in a Doublemint Gum theme for fraternal twins. At first I was dumbstruck and the concept alluded me. After some thought I had to admit to myself that the bright mint green was gender-neutral. I wasnt crazy about the intensity of the bold green color, but we managed to pull out some other colors from the gum wrappers to use in accessories that toned the wild green color down to an acceptable level. I was able to find some Doublemint Gum print fabric that we used to make a custom sewn set of baby crib bedding. After it was all done with, I had to pat the mom of those twins on the back for coming up with such a creative idea for her twins.

Just because the birth of twins is becoming more common doesn't mean that their nurseries have to be ordinary.

Jan Bay's love of interior design and all things to do with babies motivated her to build a site, UNIQUE BABY GEAR IDEAS which features articles on nursery decor and design, reviews of various articles of celebrity baby gear and the creation of unique one-of-a-kind nursery themes.

FBI and FCC Seek Control of Software Industry

With government agencies, one often has to try to guess what they are hiding. A close look at a FCC policy document released at 9 p.m. on a Friday may shock you.

Controlling Software

The Federal Communications Commission has issued a policy paper that sets free speech back a few thousand years. Yep, the FCC is taking the position that computer software companies must first get approval from the FBI before they will be allowed to put software products on the market. Think about that for a minute and cringe.

The ostensible reason for Big Brothers power grab is, once again, the pursuit of terrorist and bad, bad people. You see, Brother wants to make every software company put a backdoor in their systems that lets Big Brother access your computer on the sly to keep an eye on you. No doubt, many evil people use Adobe and Microsoft products!

Big Brother Out of Control?

Obviously, everyone is interested in catching terrorists and bad guys. The idea of giving the FBI carte blanche power over the software industry, however, goes way beyond such concerns. Let us consider a practical example.

What if construction companies had to seek approval from the FBI before building homes? The ostensible reason would be to make sure the FBI could place cameras and wire taps in every home to monitor and stop terrorist activities. Surely, nobody could disagree with such a noteworthy goal. On the other hand, how would you feel about having cameras in each room of your home?

For a counter argument, government apologists claim that the FBI would watch the computer activity of only a small number of people because the FBI doesnt have the manpower to do anything else. This argument is so much nonsense. Watching computer activity doesnt require manpower. It is a technical function carried out by a software program. The FBI already has such programs, including the controversial green lantern program. If it didnt, why would it want this power?

FBI monitoring programs run automatically. They continually accumulate data, which can be accessed when needed. This data collection can be used in thousands of different ways by hundreds of different agencies. For instance, what if the IRS audits you? What is to stop it from accessing your computer data and looking at all of the sessions you performed online banking? Nothing. The IRS and FBI work hand-in-hand on numerous prosecutions.

The United States is supposed to be the land of the free. Just dont assume as much when using your computer.

Grandparents Custody Rights - Fight to See Your Grandchildren

Grandparents custody rights are different in all 50 States. Each state has legal cases that take precedent as the foundation for case law. It is generally accepted though, that grandparents can fight for visitation or custody of their grandchildren in all states with due cause.

In today's society with high divorce rates, extended families are often fractured. It is a terrible tragedy that grandchildren are often deprived of one of the most precious relationships, that of spending time with their grandparents. It hurts the grandkids and grandparents alike.

Besides divorce, there are instances of neglect and abuse that can cause great fear and concern for grandparents that are witness to this type of behavior. Sometimes grandparent's children are not capable of parenting their grandchildren and social services need to step in and deal with the situation.

Often it is more desirable for the grandparents custody rights to be exercised in a way that gives them custody of the grandchildren. This is largely preferred instead of having the grandkids end up in foster care. When and if the grandkids mother or father is again able to properly care for their kids, they can petition the court to get their children back.

There is tremendous emotional volatility around grandparents taking custody away from their children. There is often anger, expressed as outright hostility from the grandchild's parent. From the grandparent's perspective there is usually sadness and pain that they somehow failed to raise their child in a way that made them incapable of being a good parent.

Storing Towels in Your Bathroom

Bathroom towel racks are one of the most commonly used means of adding extra storage space to a bathroom. They are relatively simple to install, and can help to keep your bathroom looking tidy and stylish.

The most basic racks come in two different designs. The first is not actually a rack, but rather a single horizontal shelf that can be used to store folded towels. However because it is a shelf, it does not offer the ability to hang towels. For that, you need a railed towel rack.

Railed towel racks are similar to towel shelves, but because they contain rails they can be used to hang towels vertically as well as store them horizontally.

More expensive designs tend to have an arrangement of two or more railed shelves, in addition to an under hanging rail bar or set of hooks. These provide extra storage space, as well as hanging space, and are therefore far more functional that shelves or single railed racks.

Although these are physically larger than the other alternatives, their extra functionality tends to make them the preferred option for homeowners.

Installing A Towel Rack In Your Bathroom

Towel racks require a bit more skill to install than regular towel hooks, although the basic principle remains the same. You must first decide where on the wall you would like to install your rack, making sure there is enough clearance space around the rack.

If you are installing a railed rack, you also need to ensure that there is enough vertical space for your hanging towels. This can easily be done by holding a towel at the location you are thinking of installing your rack, and making sure that it does not touch the floor and is a reasonable distance away from it.

After deciding on your location it is important to scan that area with a metal detector to check for electrical wiring or pipes in the wall. Once you are certain there is nothing there, place your rack on the wall using a spirit level to ensure it is completely level. You can then screw in your rack into the wall.

Depending on the size of your rack, you may have to use wall plugs in addition to the screws. These will provide extra grip to the screws, and prevent the rack from ripping them out the wall under heavy loads.

This whole process shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes, after which you will have added some valuable storage space to your bathroom!

Lessons Learned About Bathroom Vanities

There are many lessons to learn about bathroom vanities, and hopefully homeowners will take the time to learn them before starting a massive and expensive project. What are some tips to remember when decorating your bathroom with a vanity?

1. Make the Bathroom Vanity the Central Piece
This not only applies in decorating the bathroom but also when starting the remodeling process. It's best to figure out what type of bathroom vanity you want to use as the center of the bathroom long before you start tearing into walls. Some bathroom vanities just demand to be the center of attention, while others tend to more easily adapt to the surroundings.

2. Use Color to Your Advantage
Remember that lighter colors make the bathroom seem bigger. Darker colors will make the room seem smaller. This applies not only with wallpaper and paint but also with the color of your bathroom vanity. If you are ordering an antique cherry vanity, then hopefully you have sufficient space in the room, otherwise you may be creating a claustrophobic atmosphere.

3. Use Mirrors to Your Advantage
Have you ever been in a restaurant with a large wall mirror and mistakenly though the room was much bigger than it really was? Mirrors can cast illusions in a large property like that, and do just the same for a small bathroom. Adding a large mirror in a medium sized bathroom may actually cause the room to look much smaller than it is. If your bathroom seems to be missing something and seems a bit "empty" then adding a medium sized bathroom vanity mirror could turn out to be a beautiful addition.

Find the Bathtub You Need With These Simple Tips

Your bathing experience should always be refreshing, relaxing, and comfortable. Here are some tips to assist you in finding the perfect bathtub to buy.

If you're getting a new bathtub for your personal use. Comfort is the number one most important thing to consider. Above all, you'll remember the comfort you experience while relaxing in your bathtub. Keeping your needs in mind, you should evaluate all the features offered to avoid regretting your decisions later.

Once you have found one that has the correct depth, the next thing to decide is what size and what shape you want your tub to be. Bathtubs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You need to be certain to purchase a bathtub of the size and shape that will fit your particular bathroom space, design and layout. The medium size tub is ideal for those who like to listen to music or read a book while having a bath. If you like soaking with someone, a two person tun will be a great choice.

Having a bath in a comfortable tub can offer many health benefits, including much needed relaxation. Take into consideration any therapeutic treatments the tub can offer, especially if you suffer from any medical issues. Hot baths refresh the body and soothes your mind. This process mimics weightlessness thus lowering the stress placed on the heart as well as reducing blood pressure.

As relaxing as a bath is supposed to be, taxing or stressful movement can lead to medical issues like back or lower limb pain. Your bathtub should be large enough for you to totally immerse yourself. If you have trouble with back pain, you may want to think about buying a tub with built-in lumbar back support.

If there are elderly members in your household consider a walk-in bathtub which will allow them to safely and comfortably enter the tub via a side door. One innovation in bathtubs is one which has a door allowing you to enter and exit in by walking through this side opening. This design is good for the physically challenged and elderly. Walk-in bathtubs are ideal for those who have difficulty getting in and out of a typical bathtub as it requires less effort to enter and exit through a side door than to navigate a high side.

Latest Bathroom Tile Designs - Trends in Tiles

Copper, Hardwood, Glass, Stainless - what's the connection?

Quite simply, these are some of the latest trends in bathroom tile designs! Want to make your bathroom the hippest one on the block? Feel like you're a do-it-yourselfer with a flair for the latest designs? Find out what today's coolest designers are saying about the use of these materials in your bathroom tile choices.

Metal Bathroom Tile Designs

Metals like stainless steal, brushed copper, and satin bronze are coming on strong in the race for the trendiest bathroom remodeling materials. The old days of using huge sheets of stainless or copper are out and now we're seeing the use of small tile squares of the same material being put together in very interesting patterns. With the new choices in form factors it's making it easier to choose metal as an accent pattern instead of having to use it for a whole wall.

Most often we're seeing metal bathroom tile designs in the backsplash area. If you're going for a traditional and timeless look, stick with bronze and copper as they have a nice antique feel. On the other hand if you are looking for a contemporary and polished look, there's no better choice than top quality stainless steel.

Glass Bathroom Tile Designs

Glass tiles have been around for a long time but they used to be quite expensive. Now with the multitude of glass tile manufactures these days, prices have come down and selection has gone through the roof. Now instead of simply tiling your backsplash we are seeing whole walls or shower stalls done quite elegantly with glass. There is a level of luxury that only glass can achieve. While it used to be reserved only for the fancy hotels and restaurants, now it's becoming the latest in tile design trends in modern homes.

Glass comes in so many finishes from glossy to flat and the color spectrum is endless. Sometimes the most challenging part of integrating glass tiles into your bathroom tile design is settling on a style from all the choices available.

Also, let's not forget that glass is probably the "greenest" material available since it can come from 100% recycled materials. Those people in the remodeling industry are always looking for ways to reuse old material and make it a fascinating part of your new decor.

Hardwood Bathroom Tile Designs

In some old houses we used to see shower stalls and bathtubs surrounded by beautiful wood. While it looks amazing, it's not very practical for the moist bathroom air. With new porcelain tile manufactured to look like hardwood, you can have that look again in an easy to install, clean, and maintain tile.

These tiles make a great addition to a country home or your house in the woods.

Anatomy of Today's Home Office

Privacy, functionality and versatility play a large role in the location. The space must also afford the user design freedom to create the best working atmosphere.

This is such a personal choice as everyone works and organizes differently. Much time should be spent on the personal side of this space.

Moms; The Exception

One exception to the separation of the home office is for that of the working stay at home mom. In many instances, newborns and small children not quite ready for school have to be watched as mom works.

This type of office can also be introduced into a remodeling project. It takes a little more creativity, but it can be done.

A few popular areas are within the kitchen, bedroom or family room. This type of home office does present problems though. The obvious being that it is very difficult to separate work and home activities.

That said, the alternative to working outside the home and having children go off to day care is just not that appealing a choice for many moms.

Technology and Lighting

Lighting and technology will also play a significant role in the final design. The lighting package should consist of several different types including natural light if at all possible.

Nothing can hurt the appeal to use a home office more than improper lighting creating a dungeon affect.

The space should have general lighting as well as task specific and accent lighting. The accent lighting can be used to show off favorite works of art, educational achievements and family photos.

With continued advances in technology, every effort should be made to accommodate present day structured wiring. This will allow for the most flexibility and expansion possible in the future.

Faxes, printers, PDAs and Blackberries have all become a necessity to today's home offices. The ability to integrate and synchronize multi-devices has become a great organizing tool for many without a support staff.

Combining Maximum Organization with Beauty

Organization of the space itself should not be limited to some generic metal file drawers and boring bookcases. Custom layouts including wood front multi-functional file drawers as well as cabinetry designed to hide equipment and maybe even a refrigerator should be considered.

Faxes and copiers are easily stored on roll out shelves within the cabinets for an uncluttered look. Multiple workstations setup for computers and adequate writing surfaces are a necessity.

Design Style & You

It is easy to introduce ones personal touch and design preferences into a home office. Independent from the rest of the home, the users' personality should sing out giving more desire to use the space.

A preference to design style and colors of the user should not be driven by the overall house decor and style.

Questions to Get you Started

Consider the answers to the following questions before designing your space.

1. Who will be the main user?

2. Is the user(s)left or right handed?

Note: If this space is a multi-user office and space is limited this could dramatically affect the layout.

3. How much space does each user require?

4. What are each users privacy requirements?

5. What equipment will be required for each user?

Ways to Stop Losing Your Car Keys

You obviously don't need to read this article if you rarely lose your car keys. However if you misplace your car keys often and have a pretty good relationship with your locksmith, it's time to change these bad habits into good ones.

One of my friends, recently lost their car keys. I would like you to listen to what I'm about to say and see if it makes sense to you. Most people get two keys when they buy a car. This means, if they lose one key, they now have a spare key. When they lose their first key, this should give them a pretty good clue that the second key is now the only key, if they wish to drive their car.

Does that make sense? If you lose your first key, you don't have a second or spare key anymore. Now is a good time to purchase a spare key or have one made. Don't wait until you lose the second one, unless you are planning to change your bad habit into a good one.

Now let me get back to my friends who recently lost their car's key. The car they were driving was a new Honda and you can't go to the locksmith to get another key made. You have to order one from the Honda dealer and this key cost them over $200. That's a lot of money for one key.

Now my friends lost both of their original keys and now have one key to operate the vehicle and this key cost them over $200. Now if I had to pay this amount of money, I would make sure that I never lost this key ever again. I would do whatever it to to change my old habits and create some new ones.

How hard is it to get in the habit of placing your keys inside of your purse. Placing your keys in your pockets and then only removing them when you are going to place them inside of a drawer, container, cup, bowl or on a shelf in your bedroom. If you place your keys in a drawer, this will keep them out of other people's temptation.

If you choose to lay your keys in a bowl, in the kitchen, there's a good chance someone will take them or another member of your family could lose them. Place your keys in a protected area, do not leave them out in the open ever.

Build Your Own Wind Turbine - House Ideas

As one of the greatest sources of inexhaustible energies available, wind power is the best available source for generating electricity while reducing pollution. This very reason is why people are opting to install windmills for their individual household electricity needs. For building a wind turbine, you don't need any advanced construction or engineering skills. In fact practically any person can do this task with ease. When the blades spin they generate power and it is converted into electricity by the turbine. This is done by an electrical motor present inside the turbine. The first and foremost thing about installation is finding the appropriate location for placing the unit. The location should be free of obstacles and should have wind speeds above 5 MPH. The roof tops are an excellent place for installing a windmill. There are some basic materials that you will need, which include: a tower to give support to your system, a generator, blades, mounting and batteries. These parts are available in nearly any hardware store across the country.

Benefits of building a wind turbine for yourself:

- Can save about 80% of your monthly electrical bills, or even eliminate them completely.

EX: If monthly power bill is around $200, you can cut it down to $40. By this around $1000 can be saved every year. You can even produce excess electricity to eliminate your bill and sell left over electricity back to your local power company.

- Get tax credits for using green energy, this is part of the government's environmental plan.

- Protect your environment by reducing global warming and your dependence on expensive fossil fuels.

- The value of your house is increased.

On average, a self-made windmill doesn't cost more than 200 dollars. This can be easily paid back by savings on electricity in a fairly short period of time. Rather than buying an expensive commercial one it's better to opt for a homemade model, which only takes a day or so to assemble, even with limited skills. It's wise to choose many smaller systems than a bigger one. Through this method, even when one system is shut down for maintenance, the other systems can generate power and you don't have to supplement your wind power with electricity from your power company.

The cheapest option for installing wind turbines is to go with DIY Wind Turbine Instructions which includes detailed instructions, step-by-step video walk-throughs and even locations to get all of your materials as cheap as possible.

With DIY wind turbine instructions you can be living off the grid, on free wind energy, for as little as a $200 start up cost.

Start saving money and the environment today, what are you waiting for?

Shower Heads - Tips For Buying the Right Shower Heads

Most of us do not bother to find out how much our morning shower is costing us. We feel that as long as the shower head is able to provide a pleasant shower, even an old one will do. What people do not realize is that with dwindling water resources and rising energy costs, they could face inflated energy and water bills. Depending on the type of shower head, you could either pay or save plenty of dollars every year on heating and water costs. Hence, you must first find out about the benefits of a shower head before proceeding to purchase one.

Choose The Right Type Of Shower Head

Shower heads are available in different sizes and styles depending upon make and model. They are made to suit requirements of a wide variety of customers. Most houses and apartments come with cheap pre-installed ones. Shower head costs actually depend on the make and type and vary from as low as $100 to even greater than $1000. Another factor to consider while choosing a shower head is the built-in technological features such as thermal energy features provided in the model. Of course, better features also mean increased costs!

Avoid Shower Heads Having Complex Installation

Before buying that attractive shower head, you need to make sure you are aware of its installation procedure. Different shower heads have different installation procedures. Shower heads with complex installation procedures may require you to make various modifications to the plumbing in your house. This can increase the burden on your pocket!

Choose The Model According To Your Requirements

While purchasing a shower head, one must look at the different water spraying ways that are offered by the shower head. Generally those with adjustable spray settings are more popular. Shower heads are available as hand-held and wall-mounted models in the market. You should choose one depending upon the space you have as well as the ease with which it can be used. To enjoy spa-like features you can also avail of vertical showers. Ultimately, the best shower heads are those that have some energy and water saving mechanism and also match the dcor of your home!

Framing Wood Shower Pans - Bathroom Remodeling

Whether you live in a home that has a bathtub or a shower, there is a good chance that structural framing could be damaged if there was any water leaking around the plumbing fixtures. The damage should be repaired before framing your pan.

If you're replacing a bathtub and installing a new shower this is going to require constructing a wood shower pan. Now building a wood pan will require a level floor surface, shower damn and blocking.

Now let's start with building the shower damn. You're probably wondering what is a shower damn and what does it have to do with the wood shower pan. The shower damn is actually the area you climb over when entering into the shower. This part of the shower pan enables the water to flow off a shower curtain or door into the shower pan and down the drain.

The shower damn needs to be at the least 6 inches tall and would be best if it was at least 8 inches. You can use a 4 x 6 or a 4 x 8 for the wood shower damn.

Next we need to block the perimeter of the pan area in the wall framing that we will use for our shower walls also. These blocks should be at least 12 inches high. This would require using 2 x 12 lumber for blocking.

After you block the perimeter of the shower pan and installed the shower damn you are ready to have to shower water proffed with a process known as hot mopping the shower pan or using a vinyl liner.

Well I hope this gives you a better idea of what's involved when framing shower pans during the house framing process.

New Home Buyers Beware

Ican't believe how many homebuyers purchase a house, with very little information and a Lotta hope. I'm a general contractor and often work on these homes, after they have been purchased and a homeowner has their money, the real estate professional is no longer involved in the transaction and the new homeowner is starting to experience the pitfalls from buying the home, that they sincerely believe was in good condition.

It's usually somebody like me that gets involved with the new homeowners after everyone else is out of the picture and chooses not to return their phone calls or explains to them quite simply, it's not our responsibility, you're the new homeowner and we really feel sorry for you, please call us again if we can help you with anything.

You couldn't even help me with that, why would I want to call you again if I had a problem. I never could understand this thinking but have ran into it often. It sounds like an oxymoron when someone refuses to help you but offers you help in the future. What ever!!!.

If homebuyers had something else to rely on besides their real estate salesperson, home inspection service, mortgage or insurance professional, I believe they can eliminate some of these problems. Where do you start and how do you get the information. You can gather information from reputable people, books, the Internet and so on.

The problem is how do you know these people are reputable and the books on the Internet have good information. This brings us to another problem, but I've got the solution that will help eliminate some of the grief. I'm not going to remove all of the grief from your life but have a suggestion for you that will eliminate some of the pain when buying a home.

Arm yourself with a good home inspection checklist. You can search the Internet and they have quite a few good home inspection checklist to work with. These checklist can provide you with things you might not have thought of, and this is where you can eliminate some of the problems.

If you took one of these checklists with you while you were shopping for a home, you would be aware of some of the problems with the home. You might not find all of the problems but these checklist will help you with some of the problems.

Remodel Instead of Selling Your Home - Home Tips

Why sell your home when you can remodel and create the home of your dreams

After living in your home for a long time, you may end up getting bored looking at the fixtures and decor of your home. The options you have for a change are to either sell the house and buy a new one, or a better option which is to remodel and create your dream home.

Buying a new home does not always prove to be a practical choice as you may have to shift the kids' school, spend more time commuting to your workplace, need more time getting accustomed to the stores and markets near you and of course, get your old home sold for the right price.

Keep your budget in mind

When remodeling your home, you will first have to keep your budget into consideration, if you have any additions or requirements to be added to your home and any particular style that you intend to implement in the house. The rooms that need most attention when remodeling are bathrooms and kitchens as these are the most used rooms, and have new accessories coming up that will make your rooms look much better than they were before.

Like if you lack a room for your kids or a guest room, consider adding this by perhaps adding an extra room to your home. You could consider transforming a basement to a game room or your garage into an apartment to give that extra space to your family.

If you like outdoor entertaining, you could consider adding a patio or deck to facilitate this. And if you are suddenly involved in becoming environmentally conscious, you could consider using environmentally friendly products in the remodeling of your home.

You get better rates by meeting neighborhood standards

Instead of just renovating and remodeling your home to your ideas and budget, with some research, you will be able to find out what changes will bring the best rate to your home in the future.

If you find out that your home is the only home that has only one bathroom, you could consider adding a bathroom to your home when remodeling. This is because if you can meet the neighborhood standard, you will be able to get a better rate for your home when selling it.

If you plan any additions to your home, make sure it is in proportion to the house. It should be an accent to the house, and not end up as a focal point. Your remodeling should always work to your benefit as it is not always that home buyers will like the house the way you have remodeled it.

Remodeling your home gets a better resale price

Remember that though you may be selling it in the future, you have to remodel it so that you are all comfortable in it till you sell it. It is not necessary to spend a fortune on remodeling; you can make quite an impact with a restricted budget.

Not only do you get a new home by remodeling your home, you also get extra years of pleasure, which may in turn increase the value of the home. This will fetch you a better price, if you intend to sell the house in the future.

Bathroom Tile Installation - 5 Tips For Success

Bathroom tile installation is a great upgrade for any bathroom. Many homeowners tackle this job themselves. It's really not that hard provided you learn about the tricks that you must get right. For example think about these five tricks for bathroom floor tile installing.

A firm foundation.

Floor tile can be installed over all kinds of surfaces. But the one essential needed for a good installation is stability. Often bathroom floors have some water damage and are a little bit spongy. If a floor has any give to it at all, that's a floor that will have cracked tile. There is one sure way to have a solid floor and that's to use cement board as an underlayment for your floor. Be sure to learn about cement board.

Start at the right spot.

Bathrooms are often smaller rooms. You'll be cutting tile to fit on at least two walls. Make sure you start in the center or at one of the walls so the cut tiles are least visible. Nothing looks worse than tile grout lines that are running off at an angle from a wall right in plain sight!

Plumbing done right.

The toilet will have to come up for floor installation. Make sure you're ready to reset the toilet. Have all the hardware on hand. Be sure the mounting bolts are long enough for the new toilet height.

Lots of cuts.

In a small room like a bathroom, you'll get to do quite a few bathroom tile trimming cuts. You'll need your nippers for any curve cuts, like around the toilet. Plus you'll need at least a small tile saw and a tile cutter board is helpful too. None of these tools has to be very expensive. Even light duty tile saws aren't very expensive.

Grout is key.

Grout isn't waterproof. Water slowly seeps through regular masonry grout. So it's a good idea to keep bathroom tile grout well sealed. Also consider using an epoxy grout in a bathroom tile installation. This grout solves the grout leaking problem. But epoxy is highly toxic and not safe to breathe. Get a good mask.

Ceramic bathroom tile is practical and beautiful. With the right information, most anyone can install tile and produce a professional looking job. Just get the few key tricks right and you'll have a great addition to a bathroom.

Finding Something You Don't Like About Yourself - Creating Habits

Finding something you don't like about yourself is usually very easy for most people. Most of the time you don't even have to ask your family or friends because you have heard them complain about the same thing for years. How many times have you heard someone mention, I need to lose weight?

Here's a list of things people don't like about themselves. If you're one of those people that has a hard time finding something wrong with yourself, you could always ask one of your friends for some suggestions. I'm sure they would like that.

1. The need to lose weight. This of course is one of the worst problems with Americans. Most people need to lose weight and let's not forget there are some people that need to gain weight.

2. The need to stop gambling. As more Indian reservations are allowed to build gambling casinos and of course as the Internet gambling gets larger, I've noticed some people with gambling problems.

3. The need to stop drinking alcohol. The abuse of alcohol has been going on for many years. These people have an excuse for why they drink and most of the time it doesn't make sense.

4. The need to stop smoking. This could be one of the most difficult things I've ever seen my friends and family deal with.

5. The need to stop excessive behaviors. For example, gossiping, cruelty, bullying, lying, cheating, stealing, partying etc. You get the idea.

6. Don't forget the dreaded shopaholic. Most shopaholic's seem to have large credit card debt and can't seem to stop this vicious circle of buying and owing money to their creditors.

7. Working long hours or the workaholic. Sometimes this is a necessity but I would suggest that you change your lifestyle if possible. Reevaluate your reasons for working so hard.

8. Religious fundamentalists. People that spend too much time at their place of worship and soon find themselves feeling guilty if they're not doing something spiritual.

9. The need to be on time. This would include people that have problems giving themselves enough time to get ready for work or school.

10. The need to stop doing drugs. I thought by now, approaching my 50s, that drugs would no longer be a problem in the United States, but it is. It's one of the most damaging things people can do to their lives.

There are plenty of things that people would like to stop doing or start doing. If you're a smoker and you seem to shop excessively near the casinos, I would advise you to start with something small and work your way up to the big stuff.

What are you going to change today about your life? Make a list of things that you're not happy with about your life and start making the changes today that you need to create the life you deserve and desire.

Her Fix-it Guide to Toilet Repair

Imagine your home without toilets. Yes, the thought itself is enough to make you cringe. The toilet is often the most used, or should we say the most 'misused' fixture in the home. The importance of the toilet can only be felt at the exact point in time when something goes wrong with it. Toilets generally are a fairly easy DIY project that can be successfully completed by anyone. With just a bit of work and the tips you will find in this article, you should be able to quickly fix your toilet.

The first step in fixing a toilet is to determine the problem with the toilet. Your toilet could either be a slow moving toilet, or it could be clogged, or it could even be a running toilet. A slow moving toilet implies that you have to flush the toilet quite a number of times and the water drains away quite slowly. Slow moving toilets are often the result of clogged sewage drain pipes, and are at risk of suddenly clogging completely and overflowing. No one likes to clean up the mess an overflowing toilet creates. A running toilet is one where once you flush it, the water does not want to stop flowing into the toilet bowl. A running toilet can use up a large amount of water over a fairly short period, so it is important to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Make no difference which problem you have, you can fix it yourself. If you happen to have a clogged or slow moving toilet, then the first thing you should do is turn off water supply to the toilet. You can do this can be by turning the knob on the shut off valve to the right until the water supply stops. The valve is normally placed a few inches above the floor on the left when facing the toilet.

Now determine which the problem you have. To do this, pour a bucket of water quickly into the bowl. If it flushes slowly, the toilet has developed a clog. Clear the clog affecting your toilet by first using a plunger. If this removes the clog, then you can turn the water back on to the toilet, if it does not clear the clog, then you should try using a plumbers snake. This tool will allow you to clear most any clog.

Once you have the clog taken care of, then you should clear the mineral deposits that tend to develop in the small holes under the rim of the toilet. This will help your toilet flush much more effectively. These holes can be cleared with a stiff bristled brush, or you can use the bent end of a coat hanger to poke the holes clear. You might also want to make use of a small mirror to see the holes that are being cleared.

If your toilet is letting water into the bowl at all times, then you have a running toilet. First off, remove the toilet tank lid and sit aside out of your way. Some people like to place it in the bathtub. Next check the ball cock, which is the valve that the float is attached to. If water is coming out of the valve, you may need to replace it.

If that doesnt seem to be the problem, then press down on the flap at the bottom of the toilet tank to see if the water stops running into the bowl. Over time, these flaps tend to warp out of shape and cause the tank to leak into the bowl. If this solves the problem, then replace the tank flap.

Whichever needs replacing, be certain to shut off the water supply to the toilet before you begin your repair.

Selecting the Right Bathroom Countertop Materials For Your Bathroom

Countertop materials and colors really set the tone for your overall bathroom design. Many colors, styles, pattern and materials are available to choose from - each with its own special qualities. In addition to making a statement bathroom countertops can still be practical, providing additional workspace. Choosing a particular material can set the tone of the room

By customizing your bathroom countertop, you will be able to address all of your bathroom needs and add your own personal sense of style. You will need to choose for your bathroom design project a countertop that can accent your major fixtures like your shower, toilet, vanity, etc.

Bathroom countertops are made from materials that are durable and, and are also quite easy to maintain. Most countertops are constructed by combining a base of plywood or particleboard that then spans across the top of a cabinet and the finish surface material. Materials used in bathroom countertops also include any mastic, glue, mortar or grout needed to adhere the surface to the base and keep it impervious to water and stains.

While functionality is important in the kitchen since the kitchen countertops take more of a beating that bathroom countertops do, when it comes to bathroom countertops you are more able to consider appearance above all else. Since bathroom countertops are generally custom-made, you will find that the style and design options are wide open.

Bathroom countertops come in many types of surfaces and materials. These include: laminate, solid surface, ceramic tile, marble, and granite.

Laminate

Laminate represents the lowest installed cost and a wide choice of colors, patterns and textures. While laminate is stain and scuff resistant is can still be susceptible to burns and nicks.

Solid Surface

Solid surface bathroom countertops provide more design flexibility along with easy maintenance. These surfaces are easy to clean and sanitize. Scratches and most types of stains can be buffed out. Solid surface countertops imitate the look of natural stone such as marble, granite or slate. This type of material can be machined with standard woodworking tools, although you may find that you need a professional installer.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile has long been a top choice for bathroom countertops. It is known for its variety of styles, colors, patterns and materials. Prices range widely, depending on quality, and you may find that not all tiles are suitable for bathroom countertops. Tile is made of clay, shale, and porcelain. There are different types of tiles including glazed and ceramic.

Marble

Marble is know for its beauty, but because it is soft and porous and can stain easily. Nevertheless marble still remains a top choice for bathroom countertops, walls and floors. Marble is available in slab or tile forms and in a variety of thicknesses.

Granite

Due to its beauty and durability granite is a more high-end choice for countertops. It is less susceptible to scratching and absorption than marble. Granite bathroom countertops withstand heat and the high usage that a bathroom counter would be exposed to. There are a wide variety of colors available, as well as finishes, including high polish, matte and rough-textured.

Advantages of Framing With Steel Studs

I have heard all sorts of stories over the years of the advantages in framing with steel versus wood studs. One time I even heard you could build an entire house with the amount of recycled steel from a large automobile such as a Cadillac. I find this hard to believe unless you're building a very small home.

My personal favorite for framing with steel studs is that they are extremely straight. I have built nonbearing partition walls using 12 foot 3 1/2 inch wide steel studs and after the drywall you can lay an 8 foot level to check it for straightness on the wall with amazing results.

If you use 3 1/2 inch wide steel studs with 5/8 of an inch drywall you will get an extremely durable and sturdy wall. Framing was steel studs is common in office renovations or remodeling. Most of the steel stud framing is done via the drywall contractors.

Steel studs and termites do not mix. You'll never have to worry about these little buggers or other uninvited house pests damaging your walls.

Over the years I have heard stories that steel framed buildings are earthquake and fire proof. They might be more resistant to fire than wood but keep in mind when metal is hot enough it will bend and warp making it unusable.

When I hear people talking about a fireproof building built with metal framing components my first thought is all of the other materials used in building the house that are not fire resistant. Don't get a false illusion when buying a house framed with steel studs and think it is 100% fire proof.

As far as steel framed buildings being earthquake proof this is another story. I really can't comment too much on earthquake damage to a steel building. The problem with earthquakes is they seem to create fires. So even if you're building does survive an earthquake it could get damaged by a fire in the area.

I have framed more wood homes than steel homes over the years and my steel stud construction is limited to nonbearing partition walls usually located in office buildings. I love framing with metal because of its light weight and ease of construction.

I still love framing with wood. There is something about what framing that I have always loved and always will.

Change Your Thinking About Life

What do I do when I get down and out. Well that use to happen to me often and I seemed to suffer with some minor depression. It would seem like time would stand still. I would look at the clock and notice the time. Let's say 2:23 in the afternoon. I would look back to see what time it was about fifteen minutes latter and it would be 2:26. Wow what in the heck is going on with this clock.

I just couldn't believe it seemed like the day would never end. I would just sit there and think about all the stuff going on in my life, good and bad of course. This seemed to last until I was in my early twenties. I just didn't want to feel like this any more. I made a Conscious design not to get depressed period. I never wanted to feel like that again.

I read a book on ESP and in the book it described visualizing a rose as you went to sleep. I started doing this every night and while I was doing the exercise it seemed to make me feel relaxed in a way I never had felt before. The reason for the exercise was to teach you to visualize something peaceful. This in turn would put you in a peaceful state of mind.

Then a thought came into my noggin. What if when ever I start to feel bad or seem to be going into a sort of depressive state of mind I change my thoughts. It worked... I would start to visualize something else that made me feel comfortable and give me a peaceful feeling. Man was I surprised with my results.

Keep in mind I didn't think of this all on my own but I did put the pieces of the puzzle I needed to together that I needed to change my life. It seemed like I could use this form of self control in different parts of my life. If I was at work and someone made me mad.... Well this didn't work all the time... I still got mad. Let's pick something else OK.

I would worry about something on the job that wasn't going right. Then I would get irritated over something else that wasn't even related to what I was worrying about. Why did I take it out on the other person when what I was really mad about was something else. We do this all the time in our lives. We seem to get mad, get even or give up. Why do we do this and what can we do to stop it.

My main point to all of this is we can change our thinking and change our lives. We can learn new things to change our thinking. We don't need to give up hope that we will always be like this. Change the things you don't like about yourself. Do it today. If you need some help there is a great book that will help you change your life for the better.

You can find it at http://www.live.spiritualideas.com This book has a lot of tools to create the change in your life you want to have a more full filling life.

Putting Together Master Bedroom Bath Designs

One of the most popular remodeling projects involves putting together master bedroom bath designs. The master bath is an increasingly important part of your homes value, so it is generally a good investment of time and money to remodel and make improvements. You should not just jump in and start demolishing the old master bath, though. The first step (and a very important step) is to consider different options and draw up one or more designs of what you would like to do.
Several things are important to consider when putting together master bedroom bath designs. For instance, even a relatively small space can be redesigned so that it is more functional and feels more spacious. All you need to do is carefully plan and position the right components the right way. When planning the layout of your bathroom design think about how you move about the master bath and where each component should be located.
Master Bedroom Bath Designs
Color is also an important factor for your master bedroom bath designs. Different colors can create different effects depending on the rest of your dcor, the natural lighting and the electrical lighting in the space. As you are choosing a paint color for your bathroom bring color samples and sample materials into the bathroom space to see how they look in the ambient light.
Durability and cost are important parts of your design as well. Remodeling a master bath is a big job that you probably do not want to do very often, so select materials that are attractive as well as durable over the long term. Your budget is another important consideration. More and more manufacturers are offering extremely high end bath fixtures and components that are innovative but very expensive. Most of the time, if you splurge and spend a lot of money on these fancy items you will not recover those costs as fully in increased value of your home. It is generally better to choose mid range materials and items for master bedroom bath designs to gain the greatest return on your investment.

Raise Your Roof With a Cupola

Elevate the design of your house, a time honored way---with a cupola??

Cupolas are making a comeback---not only for barns, but for homes, garages, commercial buildings, and gazebos. Although they are ornamental, cupolas are also very functional by circulating air and providing an inexpensive light source. Cupolas provide excellent attic ventilation by providing a natural flow of warm, moist air in an upward movement through louvered or window sides of the cupola.

Cupolas bring back a bit of country to your estate by providing building ornamentation with traditional early American architecture. Installed on rooftops, they create an asymmetrical appeal that allows the outside buildings to look there absolute best.

A cupola is defined as a dome-shaped ornamental structure that sits on top of a larger building. Cupolas are called belvedere when it can be reached by an inside stairway. Lanterns, when they have windows that illuminate the areas below. Like a skylight.

Cupolas meet aesthetic and functional needs. Most owners today use them as decorative. They just screw them in on the rooftop and top them off with a weathervane or finial. Weather vanes give your cupola a personalized and finished look.

The shapes of cupolas can be round, square or octagonal. Common materials include wood, vinyl, stone and metal.

Wood is the preferred material, as it looks natural and is weather resistant; furthermore, it can be painted to match your dcor. Wood does not retain heat, but it requires upkeep of being painted every 5 to 6 years, smog and humidity affect how long the paint will last.

Vinyl cupolas are weather resistant. It is heavier than wood-so there may be extra cost to reconstruct the rooftop the cupola will sit on. Vinyl does not offer as many color options, and the color fades with consistent exposure to the elements. Vinyl is not environmentally friendly.

Proportion is important, in terms of look and function. Larger buildings require larger cupolas. Size is the big issue----what they look like on the ground versus what they look like on the roof. The ratio of 1 inch cupola per one foot unbroken roofline and height a ratio of 1 inch (tall) per foot of roof line.

When choosing a cupola one needs to stay true to the style of the building it will be placed on, cupolas should a building architectural style. Bell style roof lines are most appropriate for buildings with gambrel roof and Colonial style homes, while pagoda style for raised center barns and French Country homes.

The biggest mistake is getting a cupola that is too small, which then has the appearance of a bird house. It's all about a tower pointing to the sky. When properly proportioned it articulates the skyline, giving the building a more interesting profile.

Cupolas are an architectural accent. They are a great way to add class, sophistication, or a little country charm to add beauty to the roof line of buildings. From residential barns to grand cathedrals, the cupola is a timeless masterpiece and an inspiration to many. http://prairierosecountry.com

Prairie Rose Country provides hand-crafted cupolas built by quality craftsman out of marine plywood. Cupolas provide excellent attic ventilation. Installed on the roof tops, cupolas provide attic ventilation by removing moisture, therefore, eliminating wood rot, mildew, and musty odors. Designed for functionality, performance and curb appeal, cupolas will beautify any structure.

Creating Your Electricity

Creating your own electricity and generating your own power has always been one of my dreams. Having a self sufficient home, not only a house that takes care of itself by generating its own electricity through windmills or solar panels but the satisfaction knowing that no matter what happens to the electrical companies you will always have electricity at your home.

What a wonderful feeling it would be to get a check back from the utility company instead of paying them every single month. I don't know about you but my utility bills are ridiculous and seemed to be going up in price constantly. I can't believe all the fees they have been charging for years to all of their customers. If you add all the fees for every person in the city or county this comes to a large, a very large number and it's getting worse not better.

Generating your own electricity with solar or wind power is definitely green thinking. This is going to be the wave of the future as fuel used to create electricity continues to rise in price. I really can't imagine what the price of electricity is going to be like in 10 years as the mass consumption continues to rise in developing countries.

We have got to start taking care of our own needs through solar or wind power. We have got to start creating our own electricity to become self reliant. The more self reliant we become as a nation the less dependent we will be on major corporations, especially large power conglomerates.

Creating our own electricity can also be used for electrical cars that can be purchased in the future. Think of the money you will say in fuel costs as the price of gasoline continues to increase as well as less pollution into our environment.

This is definitely the wave of the future and common sense tells us this. I suggest you read this article again if you haven't figured out some of the problems coming our way in the future.

Think green and together we can start saving the planet.

Small Hot Soaking Tubs Add Style

Many people believe that because they have a small bathroom they really didn't have much choice as to what type of bathtub they can have. This may be true, but it does not mean there is no choice whatsoever, and with the new range of modern bathtubs now coming out on the market there is much more choice than ever before. One of the things that many people are choosing is from the range of small hot soaking tub designs, because these enable you to have a really good bathing experience without using up much space in your room whatsoever.

The great thing about them is that they can be fitted in a corner, which means not only do they give you a great bathing experience but they also end up freeing up a lot of room in your bathroom. If you have trouble with storage than this can be a real boon, and is just another reason to take a look at this particular type of bathtub design.

However it really is the bathing experience that matters, and once you've used a soaking tub just once or twice you really will never want to go back to the normal type of bathtub ever again. The usual oblong bathtub may be big but it is usually shallow, and the bathing experience cannot be matched by sitting right up to your neck in hot water.

The good news is that there are also many different styles of soaking tub, which means that it whatever your bathroom design you are almost certain to find one that will fit in with your overall style. A great way to look at various styles is to go on the Internet and see what is available from the various bathroom supplies. Once you have seen how many designs are available you really will see that a soaking tub could be just right for you.

Solar Post Cap Lights - An Important Part of Deck Design

When choosing a deck for your house, you'll be looking at all aspects of deck design, including levels, styles, materials, and overall, cost. Once you've chosen your deck design, the materials you want (wood or PVC), it's up to the creative side of you to create the finishing touches that can really 'make' the deck. One of the best ways to do that is with the use of solar post cap lights.

Support posts are necessary to hold up the structure of the deck and the stairs, but they are often very plain looking and don't add much to the design aesthetics of the deck. Adding solar post cap lights can create an interesting accent light that is not to intrusive, but illuminates just enough of the deck to make it usable at night.

Solar post cap lights are very simple in their operation. During the day, sunlight collects on a solar collector panel, which turns it into usable electricity, which is stored in the internal rechargeable battery. A photo sensitive sensor in the top of he unit 'sees' the sunlight, and knows when to turn the light on and off. As long as they get plenty of sunlight during the day, your solar post cap lights will continue to provide hours and hours of gentle nighttime illumination.

With standard lighting options, you would have to hire an electrician to install outdoor power outlets and run electric lines from your house to each light. The electrician may even have to add a new circuit to your fuse box. All that work can get expensive and in the way. Solar post cap lights eliminate the need to run wires everywhere. Since they don't run off of grid electricity, they can save you money on your electric bill as well.
